SURAT : A viral video showing rainwater gushing like a waterfall from the newly constructed roof shed at Surat Railway Station has triggered public outrage and raised serious questions over the quality of construction under the ambitious Surat Multi-modal Transportation Hub (MMTH) project.

The video, widely circulated on social media, captures water pouring from the roof of the newly built island platform concourse connecting platforms 2 and 3 during the season’s first spell of heavy rain. The incident comes just months after the concourse was completed in March 2025, while the major roof-launching work connecting platforms 3 and 4 was finished in June 2025.

Passengers and commuters expressed concern over the apparent leakage in a structure that is part of the station’s ongoing world-class redevelopment project. Many questioned how a newly constructed roof could develop such visible water leakage during its first major monsoon test.

The station redevelopment project, being executed under the MMTH initiative, began in 2024 with the renovation of Platform No. 1 and construction of a modern concourse plaza. Between March and May 2026, Western Railway undertook extensive structural work, including the installation of designer roof sheds and large steel girders connecting multiple platforms. The project progressed rapidly during a mega block that continued until mid-May.

However, the viral footage has now cast a shadow over the quality of the construction work.

“The roof was designed as part of a modern station upgrade, but such leakage during the first heavy rains raises concerns about workmanship and quality control,” commuters remarked while sharing the video online.

The MMTH project aims to transform Surat Railway Station into a world-class transport hub with improved passenger amenities, seamless connectivity and modern infrastructure. According to project timelines, more than 50 per cent of Phase-1 has been completed, with the entire first phase scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.

Despite the growing public attention, no official response was immediately available. Attempts to contact the Station Manager for comments on the viral video were unsuccessful.
