Surat | Gujarat — As the countdown to the Surat Municipal Corporation elections begins, the political atmosphere in Diamond City is heating up—not just with rallies and strategy meetings, but with a booming trade in campaign merchandise. From digital scarves to party-symbol jewellery, election propaganda has become a thriving industry even before candidates are officially announced.

Local markets across Surat are witnessing a surge in demand for innovative election materials as the three-cornered contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party, Indian National Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party gathers momentum. Traders say the early rush signals a fierce battle where visibility and voter recall could prove decisive.

High-Tech Propaganda Takes Centre Stage

Unlike previous civic polls dominated by traditional banners and posters, this election season is witnessing a shift towards high-tech printing. 3D-effect scarves, digitally printed flags and vivid leader portraits are now the most sought-after items.

“Earlier, screen printing was the norm, but digital printing has transformed the market. The faces of leaders look sharper and more attractive, and workers prefer premium-quality materials,” said Manojbhai, a campaign-material trader. “This year, technology is driving political branding.”

Special Push to Attract Women Voters

Surat’s identity as a textile hub is clearly shaping campaign strategies. Political parties are investing heavily in specially designed sarees featuring party symbols and leader images to connect with women voters.

Demand has also surged for ladies’ purses, saree pins, buckles and brooches. Traders say these items combine utility with subtle political messaging, making them ideal for door-to-door outreach.

Modi Masks and Youth Accessories in High Demand

Despite being a local body election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains the most popular face in the campaign merchandise market. Masks featuring his image and designer mufflers targeting young voters are selling rapidly.

“Children are especially excited about Modi masks, while youth prefer stylish scarves and accessories,” a shopkeeper noted.

Meanwhile, Congress supporters are placing orders for materials featuring Rahul Gandhi, though traders say the volumes remain comparatively lower.

Jewellery and Pocket Campaign Kits

A new trend this election is the introduction of jewellery-style campaign accessories. Chains with lockets shaped like party symbols—lotus, hand and broom—have become popular among supporters eager to display their loyalty. Tie pins, keychains and brooches are also witnessing strong demand.

Political parties are increasingly focusing on compact items suited for door-to-door campaigning. Ball pens, diaries and stickers are being packed into ward-wise kits ready for distribution.

“Instead of massive rallies, parties want something that stays inside voters’ homes,” Manojbhai explained. “Small, practical items leave a lasting impression.”

BJP Leads in Early Orders

Order data from traders suggests the BJP currently leads in campaign-material purchases. The AAP has emerged as a strong second, while Congress appears slower in placing bulk orders.

With weeks still left for nominations, Surat’s markets have already turned into a colourful battleground of symbols, slogans and strategy.
