Sanand | Gujarat — In a landmark moment for India’s semiconductor ambitions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated Micron Technology’s state-of-the-art ATMP facility in Sanand and launched the country’s first Made-in-India memory chip — choosing to focus on India’s technological rise rather than political rhetoric.

Significantly, despite being in his home state of Gujarat, the Prime Minister refrained from targeting the Congress or making partisan remarks, instead delivering a speech centered on innovation, global partnerships and India’s manufacturing transformation.

“Today, a message has reached the world — India is capable, India is competitive, India is committed,” Modi declared before a packed gathering at the Sanand facility.

₹22,516 Crore Investment, 5,000 Jobs

Developed by Micron Technology’s Indian arm, the Sanand ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging) plant has been built with an investment of ₹22,516 crore. The facility will manufacture memory and storage products, including SSDs and RAM modules, and is expected to generate around 5,000 jobs.

With commercial production beginning, India’s first domestically assembled semiconductor memory modules will now roll out from Gujarat — a milestone under the India Semiconductor Mission.

‘Sanand Turns Soil into Gold’

Reflecting on his personal connection to the region, Modi struck an emotional chord. “Sanand is the land that turns even soil into gold. I say this from experience. There was a time I came here by bus and cycled through these streets. I have seen Sanand transform before my eyes,” he said.

Highlighting India’s industrial evolution, he added, “This Micron facility represents the new spirit of India — an India that moves forward with an approach from policy to production.”

Focus on India–US Tech Partnership

The Prime Minister also underscored the strategic importance of India’s collaboration with the United States in emerging technologies. “This programme is a testament to the strong cooperation between India and America. Especially in technologies like AI and chips, our partnership is extremely important,” he said.

Referring to his first official meeting in Gujarat with US Ambassador Sergio Gore, Modi expressed confidence that bilateral cooperation would deepen further in high-tech sectors.

Remembering Ratan Tata

In a lighter moment, Modi recalled sending a symbolic message of “one rupee” to the late industrialist Ratan Tata, saying it reflected Gujarat’s entrepreneurial spirit. “See what a Gujju can do with one rupee of investment,” he quipped, drawing applause.
