Surat | Gujarat — The Surat-based leading KP Group has announced a mega investment of a whooping Rs 36,000 crore in Botswana for setting up a 5 GW solar project.

During the visit of the President of India, Draupadi Murmuji to Botswana, a business delegation of industrialists from Surat under the auspices of the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) visited Botswana from 10-14 November.

A high-level delegation of the SGCCI also included Dr. Farooq G. Patel of KP Group, Surat. The first fruit of this visit is the first renewable energy investment, including wind-solar, from Surat. KP Group will invest Rs. 36000 crore in Botswana’s renewable energy projects to fulfill Botswana’s zero emissions commitment. KP Group has signed an MoU with the Botswana government for an investment of 4 billion USD (Rs. 36000 crore).

According to this MoU signed between Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy,  Bokolo Joy, and KP Group, Botswana’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals will jointly develop renewable energy with KP Group and take Botswana’s clean energy to 5 GW. The project will be implemented in phases over 5 years, with 500 MW in 2027, 2500 in 2028 and 5 GW by 2030.

This will provide employment to 7000 people during the project and more than 1500 after the project and provide solar electricity to 1 lakh households. For this, 25000 acres of land will be provided by the Botswana government and the Government of India will secure the investment. As part of the agreement, KP Group will provide 30 scholarships per year to Botswana citizens for education and skill development.

This very fruitful visit is now moving in the direction of cooperation not only between India-Botswana but also between Gujarat-Botswana and significant progress has been made in it. The SGCCI has organized the second edition of Global Village in January 2026, in which the President of Botswana, Honorable Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, is visiting Surat with his high-level delegation from 22 to 25 January 2026 as the inaugural and chief guest.

It is worth mentioning here that during the November visit, a meeting was held with the delegation including the President of SGCCI Nikhil Madrasi, at the Office of the President of Botswana, in which the President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko and the Minister of Trade and Industry, Principal Secretary to the President, Botswana’s High Commissioner to India, CEO of BITC were present. The President of the Chamber, Shri Nikhil Madrasi, extended an invitation to the President and the Cabinet of Botswana to the SGCCI Global Village 2026 to be held by the Chamber of Commerce in Surat from 24 to 26 January 2026. They have gladly accepted it. His visit to Surat has been confirmed and accordingly, he will meet the Minister of Energy of Botswana as well as the Ambassador and high officials of Botswana in India on Wednesday. The President’s visit to Surat was finalised after a meeting with the Chamber’s office bearers on 17 December.

During the visit to Botswana, the SGCCI also presented a proposal for twin cities, in which areas such as urban development, technology and talent exchange, medical tourism, exchange programmes for education and students, and regular exchange of business delegations and exhibitions were discussed. Responding positively to this proposal, an agreement for twin cities between Surat and Gaborone is expected to be signed during the President of Botswana’s visit to Surat. Thus, the SGCCI is emerging as a leading institution in building new economic cooperation and closer relations between Gujarat and Botswana. Recently, the Vice President of Zimbabwe visited Surat at the invitation of the SGCCI.
