Adani Foundation’s Eye Camps with SVNM Restore Vision to Over 1,100 Rural Residents in Surat District

Surat | Gujarat —  In a remarkable initiative to combat preventable blindness in rural Gujarat, the Adani Foundation, in partnership with Swami Vivekananda Netra Mandir (SVNM) Hospital, has been organizing a series of free eye check-up and treatment camps across ten villages in Surat district. The initiative has already benefited over 1,124 rural residents, many of whom regained their sight after years of struggle with vision impairment.

According to health experts, 62 percent of blindness cases in India are caused by untreated cataracts, with rural areas being the most affected due to lack of access to healthcare facilities. Recognizing this gap, the Adani Foundation launched its sustained campaign to promote eye health awareness and early diagnosis in underserved communities.

“These camps are not just about treating eyes — they are about restoring dignity, confidence, and the ability to see life clearly again,” said an Adani Foundation representative. “Our collaboration with SVNM Hospital ensures that no one in rural Surat loses vision due to lack of awareness or affordability.”

During the most recent phase of the campaign, 1,124 individuals were screened. Among them, 388 suspected cataract cases were identified, 474 people received near-vision glasses, and 149 were provided essential eye drops. So far, 132 successful cataract surgeries have been performed at SVNM Hospital, giving patients renewed sight and a fresh start to their lives.

The camps also detected various eye conditions such as keratitis, pterygium (surfer’s eye), and retinal problems. All patients requiring specialized treatment were referred to SVNM Hospital, where they received discounted or fully subsidized care, supported by the Adani Foundation.

“We are grateful for the partnership with Adani Foundation,” said a senior doctor from SVNM Hospital. “Together, we are reaching the remotest corners of the district, identifying preventable blindness early, and providing complete care from screening to surgery.”

Beyond medical intervention, the initiative has played a crucial role in spreading awareness about eye care in rural households. Many villagers who once ignored early symptoms like blurred vision now come forward proactively for check-ups, marking a significant behavioral shift in rural health practices.

The program also highlights the Foundation’s broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) vision — promoting sustainable and inclusive healthcare at the grassroots level. With continued collaboration and local participation, the Adani Foundation and SVNM aim to make the Surat district a model for rural eye health management in India.

“Our goal is simple — no one should lose vision due to a treatable condition,” added the Foundation spokesperson. “With collective effort, we can illuminate lives — one eye at a time.”
