Patan | Gujarat —  In a disturbing case of mob justice, four young men were humiliated in Lodara village of Santalpur taluka, Patan, after being caught by villagers while visiting a girl. The villagers forcibly cut their hair and half-shaved their heads, filming the entire act and circulating it on social media. The shocking visuals have sparked outrage, with many comparing the punishment to “Taliban-style justice.”

According to reports, a youth from Kankrej taluka of Banaskantha had gone to Lodara to meet a girl with three of his friends. When villagers discovered the meeting, they decided to “teach the youths a lesson” by meting out their own form of punishment.

Humiliation captured on video

Villagers gathered around the four men, forcibly cutting their hair while jeering at them. Several locals filmed the ordeal, and the video soon went viral across Patan and Banaskantha districts.

A local resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “The village elders believe they were protecting social values. But humiliating these young men in this way is wrong and dangerous. This is not justice, it is mob rule.”

Police response: No complaint registered

Despite the widespread circulation of the video, no police complaint has been registered. Varahi Police Sub-Inspector Y.N. Patel confirmed that the police had contacted the youths shown in the viral video. “The boys admitted they were caught while meeting a girl, but they refused to file a complaint. Since the matter was related to their own community, they said they did not wish to pursue action,” Patel said.

Four villagers from Lodara were also called in for questioning, but without a formal complaint, no legal action has been initiated.

History of similar incidents

This is not the first time such an incident has been reported in North Gujarat. Nine months ago, a similar video from Tharad went viral, where a young man was brutally punished for visiting his girlfriend. In that case, villagers not only shaved his head with a blade but also thrashed him in front of others.

A local social worker criticized the trend of vigilante justice, saying: “Instead of law enforcement, people are resorting to humiliation and violence. This sets a dangerous precedent where mobs decide punishments. It is reminiscent of Taliban practices, and it must be condemned strongly.”

Rising concerns over mob justice

The incident has sparked debate on social media about community justice, youth behavior, and the absence of strong police action. Many netizens demanded stricter intervention, pointing out that such public shaming could lead to mental trauma and even suicides among victims.

Legal experts also note that humiliating someone publicly constitutes an offense under Indian law, regardless of whether a complaint is filed.
