Gandhinagar | Gujarat –— The Gujarat government is preparing to redraw the police map of the state. The plan includes a new Gandhinagar Police Commissionerate, a Zone-8 office in Ahmedabad, and fresh ranges covering Kutch–Morbi and Mehsana, marking a decisive shift in how law and order will be managed in rapidly growing and sensitive regions.

Senior officials confirmed that the Gandhinagar Commissionerate could be operationalised soon, a proposal that has been pending for nearly three years. If approved, the changes will increase the number of inspector generals of police (IGPs) heading ranges from nine to ten.

“Efforts are underway to operationalise the Gandhinagar Commissionerate soon. The city’s growth demands a stronger, more focused policing structure,” said a senior official privy to the discussions.

Currently, the Gandhinagar superintendent of police oversees both urban policing in the state capital and rural jurisdictions like Kalol, Mansa, and Dehgam. This dual responsibility has often stretched resources thin. Under the commissionerate model, Gandhinagar city will be carved out, with a deputy commissioner of police (DCP) handling security. Parts of Kadi may also be included.

The move would bring Gandhinagar in line with Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, and Rajkot, which already function under commissionerates.

Kutch–Morbi and Mehsana Ranges Proposed

Another key change is the creation of new ranges. East and West Kutch, which currently fall under the Border Range, may be grouped with Morbi to form the Kutch–Morbi Range, with a dedicated IGP overseeing sensitive border and coastal zones.

Similarly, Patan, Banaskantha, Tharad, and Mehsana could be reorganised into a Mehsana Range, easing the heavy load on the Border Range and bringing closer supervision.

Ahmedabad May Get Zone-8

Ahmedabad, the state’s largest city, could soon boast an unprecedented eight policing zones. The proposal comes amid rising population density, real estate growth, and expanding municipal limits into areas like Bopal, Sola, Sarkhej, and Bodakdev.

“A dedicated Zone-8 will streamline policing in the western corridor of Ahmedabad, reduce jurisdictional overlaps, and improve response time,” said another senior officer.

If approved, Ahmedabad would become the first city in Gujarat to have eight DCP zones, reflecting the scale of its urban expansion.
