Gandhinagar, Gujarat — Gujarat, a state consistently at the forefront of educational innovation, is actively forging a brighter future for its next generation through its ambitious ‘Mission Schools of Excellence’.

This groundbreaking initiative, launched in 2022 under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, is rapidly transforming government and grant-in-aid schools by significantly upgrading infrastructure and educational practices. With a massive investment of approximately ₹12,000 crore and a significant $750 million in funding from the World Bank, Gujarat is spearheading India’s largest inclusive school campaign.

The scale of transformation under this mission is already impressive. So far, 13,353 new classrooms, 21,000 new computer labs, 1,09,000 new smart classrooms, and 5,000 new STEM labs have been completed, laying a robust foundation for enhanced academic quality. “This is more than just building schools; it’s about building futures,” stated a senior education department official. “Every new classroom and lab is a step towards empowering our children with the best possible learning environment.”

The core objective of ‘Mission Schools of Excellence’ is to upgrade around 40,000 government and grant-in-aid schools across the state. This comprehensive overhaul includes strengthening physical infrastructure, deploying cutting-edge digital learning tools, and fortifying foundational education. This project stands as the first of its kind in India, with its expansive scope aimed at elevating the quality of school education nationwide.

The mission has set ambitious targets for its infrastructure development. The goal is to construct a total of 50,000 new classrooms, of which 13,353 are already complete, and another 31,469 are currently under construction. Beyond new builds, the modernization of existing classrooms is also a priority, with 27,872 classrooms already modernized and work ongoing on 63,860 more.

Embracing the digital age in education, the mission has established 21,000 new computer labs, with efforts underway to equip 18,000 government and grant-in-aid schools with these essential facilities. A monumental target of 1,50,000 new smart classrooms has been set, with 1,09,000 already completed. Additionally, 26,000 smart classrooms are currently being equipped in schools across the state. To nurture interest and proficiency in science and technology, 5,000 new STEM labs have been successfully established, providing students with crucial hands-on learning experiences.

“We believe that a smart classroom isn’t just about technology; it’s about engaging students in new ways and preparing them for a rapidly evolving world,” commented a teacher from a newly equipped smart classroom in Surat. “The excitement among students is palpable, and their participation has significantly increased.”

‘Mission Schools of Excellence’ is designed to ensure the holistic development of children. The school transformation encompasses planned activities such as civil infrastructure upgrades, robust digital infrastructure, smart classrooms, computer labs, STEM labs, online assessments, and crucial remedial classes. The holistic education model aims to benefit nearly one crore (10 million) students directly and indirectly, solidifying the foundation of primary education in Gujarat.
