Surat, Gujarat — In a powerful response to the escalating crisis of suicides plaguing Surat’s diamond industry, a collaborative effort by the Diamond Workers Union Gujarat (DWUG) and the Ratnakalakar Welfare Charitable Trust organized a crucial “Suicide Prevention Awareness Program” alongside a massive free distribution of 100,000 notebooks to 10,000 children of diamond workers. The dual-purpose event, held on Sunday night at Sardar Patel Smriti Bhavan, underscored a desperate plea for mental health support and educational continuity amidst a deepening industry slowdown.

The alarming rise in suicide incidents, directly linked to the current downturn in the diamond sector, has cast a dark shadow over the livelihoods of thousands. “The continuous increase in suicide incidents at an alarming rate is a stark reminder of the immense pressure our diamond workers are under,” stated a representative from the DWUG. “We cannot stand by while lives are lost. This program is an urgent call for awareness and intervention.”

The event drew a significant gathering of industry stalwarts, signaling a collective concern for the welfare of the diamond community. Prominent figures present included IDI Chairman Dinesh Navadia, GJEPC Chairman Jayanti Savalia, Surat Diamond Association president Jagdish Khunt, and DCP Zone 1 Alok Kumar. Mental health experts like renowned psychiatrist Dr. Mukul Choksi, former Navyug College professor Ramilaben Desai, and Dhabkar editor Naresh Varia delivered poignant speeches aimed at awakening and guiding the workers.

Dr. Mukul Choksi emphasized the critical importance of seeking help and destigmatizing mental health issues. “Depression and despair are not weaknesses; they are conditions that require support,” he conveyed to the assembled workers and families. “There is always hope, and there are always solutions. We must break the silence around mental health.”

This fifth annual honor program for brilliant children, now interwoven with the critical suicide prevention drive, highlights the multifaceted challenges faced by diamond worker families. By providing educational resources alongside vital mental health awareness, the initiative aims to offer both immediate support and long-term stability. The presence of Mangalaben Honawar from Mariwala Foundation and other prominent industrialists underscored the industry’s commitment to tackling this grave issue head-on and ensuring the welfare of its most vulnerable members.
