Surat, Gujarat —  A sudden and aggressive grass fire ripped through the operational area of Surat International Airport this afternoon, sending plumes of thick black smoke billowing into the sky, forcing immediate flight diversions, and igniting a litany of critical questions about airport maintenance and safety protocols. While emergency crews swiftly brought the blaze under control, the incident narrowly avoided a larger catastrophe and has put the spotlight firmly on the airport’s preparedness.

The inferno, believed to have been sparked by a gas gun used for bird control, caused immediate visibility concerns for pilots. Air traffic control wasted no time, diverting several incoming flights, including a crucial Hyderabad-to-Surat service, to Ahmedabad. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and all personnel and aircraft present at the time – including ONGC Helicopters, Air India Express flights to and from Hyderabad and Delhi, and a Venturer Air Connect non-scheduled flight – remained unharmed.

However, the rapid escalation of the fire has triggered an inevitable probe into the airport’s operational practices. Key questions are now being raised by aviation experts and concerned citizens alike:

When was the grass last cut? The prevalence of dry grass suggests a potential lapse in routine maintenance, particularly as the monsoon season approaches.

Was there an intention to cut grass before the rains? This incident underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to prevent such hazards.

Does Surat Airport possess its own lawnmower, or does it rely on external services?

Does Surat Airport issue tenders for grass mowing? The procurement process could shed light on the frequency and quality of maintenance.

Was a fire extinguisher bottle kept alongside the bird-scaring gas gun? The preliminary cause points to a spark from this device, making the immediate availability of a fire suppression tool paramount.

Firefighting teams from both the Airport Authority of India and the Surat Municipal Fire & Emergency Services converged on the scene with remarkable speed, working on a “war footing” to douse the flames and prevent their spread into sensitive operational zones. “Firefighting teams are working on a war footing to bring the situation under control,” an airport official confirmed, emphasizing that “passenger safety remains the top priority.”

While the immediate crisis was averted by the prompt action of the airport fire team, leading to the fire being brought under control and all flight operations deemed safe, the repercussions lingered. The Dubai-to-Surat flight in the afternoon was significantly delayed due to the ongoing firefighting operations. Airport operations were partially suspended, with full resumption contingent on complete extinguishment and comprehensive safety checks.
