Surat, Gujarat – Utran Railway Station, standing proudly on the banks of the Tapti River since 1860, has received a major facelift under the central government’s Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). With a total investment of nearly ₹8 crore, the station has been transformed into a modern, inclusive, and passenger-friendly hub—without losing touch with its rich historical significance.

Notably, Utran was part of India’s first railway line of the BB&CI Railway, the predecessor of Western Railway, connecting Utran to Ankleshwar. More than 160 years later, it now stands rejuvenated, echoing India’s aspirations in its Amrit Kaal of development.

“The transformation of Utran Railway Station symbolizes the vision of a modern India rooted in its legacy. We are not just building better infrastructure; we are reshaping the passenger experience with accessibility, safety, and aesthetics,” said a senior Western Railway official.

A ₹8 Crore Overhaul: Comfort Meets Accessibility

Under the ABSS initiative, Utran Railway Station now boasts a fully revamped station complex. New GI sheet-covered platform sheds provide improved shelter for passengers, while tactile tiles and low-height water taps ensure the station is easily navigable for Divyangjan.

In a significant infrastructural upgrade, a pedestrian subway has been constructed to seamlessly connect both platforms and link the east and west sides of the station. This not only enhances accessibility but also fosters urban integration with surrounding neighborhoods.

“The new pedestrian subway and the upgraded platforms are a game-changer for locals and daily commuters. It’s safer, cleaner, and much easier to navigate,” said Rina Patel, a regular commuter from Utran to Surat.

Facilities Built for the Future

Modern signage, designated parking areas, CCTV surveillance, and clearly marked pedestrian pathways now define the station’s new identity. The east side of the station features a brand-new Booking Office and Waiting Hall, designed with an aesthetic porch that allows for smooth passenger pick-ups and drop-offs.

To further enhance passenger convenience, renovated toilet blocks, as well as new Divyangjan-friendly facilities, have been introduced. The circulating area has also been restructured with defined lanes and walkways, helping reduce congestion and streamline traffic flow.

“Railway stations are the nerve centers of India’s growth story. Their modernization is critical, not just for mobility but for urban development,” said a Ministry of Railways spokesperson.

A National Mission: Amrit Bharat Station Scheme

Utran is one among 103 railway stations being inaugurated this year after redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, a nationwide initiative inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a “Viksit Bharat.” Over 1,300 stations are set to undergo similar transformations in a record time.

The scheme doesn’t merely focus on infrastructure; it seeks to make stations symbols of local identity. In Gujarat, folk art and traditional motifs are being integrated into station designs—an effort that celebrates heritage while embracing modernity.

“Our aim is to develop railway stations as icons of India’s progress. Utran’s upgrade is a small but significant step towards that goal,” said PM Modi during a recent national address on infrastructure development.

A Model for Inclusive Urban Mobility

The rejuvenation of Utran Railway Station sets a benchmark in how historic transit infrastructure can be modernized responsibly. With features tailored for the differently-abled, families, daily commuters, and long-distance travelers, it is a model for inclusive and accessible transportation hubs in India’s evolving urban landscape.
