DEVBHUMI DWARKA : While much of the country celebrated Independence Day in towns and cities, Gujarat’s Tricolour travelled far beyond the mainland on August 15, flying proudly over 15 remote and isolated islands in Devbhumi Dwarka district. The unusual celebration was organised by the police in one of Gujarat’s most sensitive coastal regions.

Police personnel braved difficult terrain, offshore travel and stringent movement restrictions to ensure that the national flag was unfurled even at some of the district’s most inaccessible locations.

Devbhumi Dwarka has 22 islands, several of them uninhabited. Because of their proximity to the maritime border and security concerns, movement to many of these islands is permitted only with prior approval from the competent authorities.

Despite these restrictions, special police teams deployed along Gujarat’s maritime frontier travelled to the islands to conduct Independence Day programmes.

In inhabited areas, police officers hoisted the Tricolour in the presence of local residents, turning the remote locations into centres of patriotic celebration.

The flag ceremonies were followed by the national anthem, with police personnel and villagers joining together in a shared moment of national pride.

“This celebration was not only about hoisting the national flag, but also about ensuring that the spirit of Independence Day reaches every corner of the district,” police officials said.

The initiative carried particular significance as India marked its 80th Independence Day. It also showcased the commitment of police personnel stationed along Gujarat’s coastline, who celebrated the national occasion while continuing to perform duties in challenging and security-sensitive areas.

The sight of the Tricolour flying across 15 distant islands sent a powerful message: geographical isolation and security restrictions could not keep the spirit of Independence Day away from Gujarat’s farthest shores.
