Surat: A shocking security breach at Surat Airport has raised serious concerns over CISF security checks after a passenger managed to carry bidis and matches onboard an Indigo Airlines flight and smoked in the aircraft’s bathroom. The incident, which endangered the lives of over 60 passengers, has sparked questions about the effectiveness of security measures at the airport.

Passenger Smokes in Aircraft Bathroom, Triggers Panic

According to reports, 37-year-old Ashok Biswas, a resident of Navsari and originally from West Bengal, had booked seat number 15 on Indigo Airlines flight E-784 from Surat to Kolkata via Jaipur. After undergoing CISF’s routine security check at Surat Airport, he boarded the flight, which was temporarily parked at the airside area due to a technical fault.

While inside the plane, Biswas entered the bathroom, lit a bidi, and began smoking. The smoke soon spread out of the lavatory, alarming both passengers and flight staff. Security personnel rushed to the scene, apprehended Biswas, and informed the Dumas police, who detained him for further questioning.

Security Oversight: How Did Bidis and Matches Get Past CISF Checks?

The incident has raised major questions regarding security lapses at Surat Airport. Passengers undergo thorough frisking and baggage screening by CISF personnel before boarding. Despite these stringent checks, Biswas managed to carry a bidi and matches onto the flight, highlighting a critical failure in the screening process.

Aviation experts stress that such lapses could lead to disastrous consequences. A senior airport official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated:

“This is a clear failure on the part of CISF. How did a passenger smuggle flammable items past security? If someone can carry a bidi and matches, what’s stopping others from smuggling in more dangerous items? This breach needs urgent attention.”

Legal Action and Investigation Underway

Following the incident, a formal complaint was lodged against Biswas by airport security officer Amrit Vasava for endangering the safety of the flight and its passengers. The Dumas police have registered a case and are conducting further investigations into the matter.

Meanwhile, aviation authorities have called for a review of security protocols at Surat Airport. An internal inquiry has been launched to determine whether CISF officers failed to detect the contraband due to negligence or gaps in the screening process.

Passengers Demand Stronger Security Measures

The incident has left many travelers concerned about airport security. Frequent fliers and business travelers have urged authorities to tighten security measures to prevent such lapses in the future.

“If someone can carry a bidi and matches past security, it raises fears about what else can be smuggled. CISF must answer for this negligence,” said a frequent flyer and businessman from Surat.
