Surat : As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 approaches, excitement is building among cricket fans worldwide. While the focus is on the players and their performances, an interesting detail remains largely unknown—every cricketer taking the field will be donning jerseys and track pants made from Surat’s polyester fabric. Surat, India’s leading hub for polyester textile production, has secured a major role in this year’s IPL, generating an estimated Rs 75 crore in business.

Not only are the players’ uniforms made from this fabric, but the jerseys worn by fans in stadiums also originate from Surat’s textile industry. The fabric used for IPL uniforms is crafted from a specialized material known as Juric, a high-performance polyester fabric. Its unique properties make it lightweight, stretchable, and comfortable for athletes. Previously, this type of fabric was imported from China, but recent government regulations have led to a shift toward domestic production, benefitting Surat’s textile sector.

Surat-based textile entrepreneur Vishnu Agarwal highlighted the significance of this development, stating, “The polyester fabric used in IPL jerseys is made from recycled plastic bottles, which are transformed into yarn and then woven into high-quality sportswear material. This has not only boosted local manufacturing but also promoted sustainability in the industry.”

The rapid growth of Surat’s textile industry is evident in the increasing number of production units dedicated to polyester fabric. In the past year alone, the number of machines operating in this sector has surged from 3,500 to around 5,500, with approximately 235 units now specializing in polyester fabric production. The shift has provided a major economic boost to local businesses, reinforcing Surat’s reputation as a key player in India’s textile landscape.

The fabric used for IPL jerseys offers numerous advantages for athletes. Designed with quick-dry technology, it efficiently absorbs moisture and sweat, ensuring that players remain comfortable even in extreme temperatures. With UV protection and antibacterial properties, the fabric helps regulate body temperature and prevents bacterial and fungal growth, keeping it hygienic throughout long matches. Additionally, its odor-resistant feature ensures that players remain fresh despite intense physical exertion.

Another remarkable quality of this fabric is its ability to withstand extreme heat. Given the challenging weather conditions during IPL matches, this polyester material allows players to perform comfortably even in temperatures as high as 50°C. A special chemical treatment ensures temperature regulation, making it an ideal choice for high-performance sportswear.

Surat’s contribution to the IPL extends beyond the players’ jerseys. The fabric for T-shirts and merchandise worn by fans is also produced in the city, although there are differences in quality and pricing. This year’s demand has significantly boosted Surat’s textile business, reinforcing its importance in the Indian sportswear industry.

With IPL 2025 set to begin on March 22, fans will be cheering for their favorite teams while unknowingly celebrating Surat’s textile excellence. The city’s polyester fabric has seamlessly integrated into the world of sports, marking another milestone for India’s textile industry on a global stage.
