Gandhinagar : In a unique move toward bridging the urban-rural digital divide, Gujarat has launched the Har Ghar Connectivity (Fiber-to-Home) initiative under the Gujarat Fiber Grid Network Limited (GFGNL). This ambitious project, spearheaded by the state’s Department of Science and Technology, aims to deliver affordable high-speed internet to rural households, transforming them into “smart homes.”

As part of the pilot phase, 25,000 Fiber-to-Home (FTTH) connections will be implemented in collaboration with various agencies. The initiative will offer a suite of value-added services (VAS), including Wi-Fi, cable TV (free-to-air and paid channels), OTT platforms, gaming, and other digital solutions. Following the pilot project, GFGNL plans to expand the initiative to cover a larger rural population.

Transforming Rural Homes into Digital Hubs

Beyond connectivity, the Har Ghar Connectivity initiative aims to empower rural communities with a range of services such as online education: accessible platforms for e-learning and skill developmen, E-Health and Telemedicine: Remote healthcare solutions for rural citizens,

E-Agriculture and IoT Solutions: Tools for enhancing agricultural productivity, efficiency and Government-to-Citizen (G2C) Services: Seamless access to government schemes and utilities, Digital Entertainment: Cable TV and OTT services for leisure and information.

This initiative promises to bridge the urban-rural divide, ensuring rural Gujarat has access to the same opportunities and services as urban areas. It aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India program and Gujarat’s progress toward a Digital Gujarat.

Four New Connectivity Initiatives

On December 25, GFGNL launched four transformative projects to enhance digital connectivity across Gujarat:

Har Ghar Connectivity (Fiber-to-Family): Targeting rural households with FTTH connections.

Fiber to Field Offices: Connecting rural government offices via the BharatNet network.

Fiber-to-Far Flung Towers: Extending connectivity to remote towers for improved mobile and internet access.

Urban Connectivity Enhancements: Strengthening connectivity for urban government offices.

Leadership in BharatNet Phase-3

Gujarat has been selected by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) as the first state to implement BharatNet Phase-3 under the State-Led Model. Building on its success in BharatNet Phase-2, Gujarat continues to lead in providing digital infrastructure. The BharatNet Phase-3 rollout, facilitated through a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with the Central Government, aims to connect rural government offices directly to Gandhinagar, ensuring enhanced e-governance and seamless communication.

Toward a Digital Future

These initiatives mark a significant step toward a Connected Gujarat, fulfilling the state government’s vision of Connected Government, Connected Citizens, Connected Communities, and Connected Businesses.

“The Har Ghar Connectivity project is a game-changer for rural Gujarat,” said an official from GFGNL. “It will empower rural communities with digital tools, creating opportunities and enhancing quality of life.”
