Surat : The iconic Surat Railway Station is being redeveloped into a world-class Multimodal Transport Hub (MMTH) at an estimated cost of Rs 1476 crore. The ambitious project aims to integrate all modes of transport, including railways, state and city buses, metro rail, and even the proposed bullet train and airport connectivity. Scheduled for completion by December 2026, the MMTH project promises to revolutionize travel and transportation in Surat.

For the first time in India, a project of this magnitude is being executed collaboratively by the Ministry of Railways, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), and the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC). The redevelopment is expected to set a new benchmark in infrastructure, with the railway station designed to offer facilities akin to an international airport.

Key Features of the MMTH Project

The Surat Railway Station MMTH project includes a host of modern features aimed at providing seamless connectivity and convenience to passengers. Key highlights include:

Integrated Access: Passengers can access rail, metro, and bus services—including city buses and the GSRTC terminal—from a single location.

Skywalk Connectivity: Three 6-meter-wide skywalks will ensure barrier-free internal connectivity between transportation modes.

Elevated Corridor: A 5.50 km elevated corridor will link the East and West station buildings with surrounding flyovers for smooth vehicular movement.

East-West Connectivity: A new route will provide better connectivity to the eastern part of Surat.

Passenger Amenities: Parking zones, entertainment areas, and commercial complexes will enhance the overall experience for travelers.

Employment and Retail Boost: The project is expected to generate significant employment opportunities and boost the local economy, particularly in retail and real estate sectors.

The MMTH project spans extensive land areas, with the East Station building covering 62,129 square meters, the West Station building 26,297 square meters, and the ST (GSRTC) bus station 33,188 square meters. The Ministry of Railways is funding 63% of the project, while the State Government and SMC contribute 24% and 3%, respectively.

Chief PRO of Western Railway, Vineet Abhishek, confirmed that 25% of the project has already been completed. The construction of Platform No. 4 has been finalized and handed over to the Railway Board. Work on Platforms 2 and 3 is set to begin soon and is expected to be completed in just 98 days once railway blocks are approved.

In addition to platforms, other critical elements, such as the BRTS-City Bus Terminal, parking zones, and elevated corridors, are under active development by Surat Integrated Transportation Development Corporation Ltd. (SITCO).

Jatin Shah, DGM of SITCO, emphasized the unique aspect of the project: passengers will no longer need to step outside the MMTH building to switch between transportation modes. The interconnected facilities will make travel seamless, convenient, and efficient.

Challenges and Future Outlook

The MMTH project aims to tackle existing traffic congestion and enhance urban mobility. Once completed, Surat Railway Station will not only set a benchmark for multimodal integration but also emerge as the most advanced railway station in India.

The ambitious redevelopment also includes the construction of a 25-storey commercial building, adding to the station’s appeal as a commercial and retail hub. This transformation aligns with Surat’s status as a rapidly growing urban center and a major contributor to India’s economy.
