Surat : Even as the Gujarat police is yet to lay their hands on the bootlegger responsible for the death of State Monitoring Cell (SMC) sub-inspector JM Pathan at the makeshift checkpoint in Kathada village of Dasada district, Surendranagar, another incident took place in Surat where the wanted bootlegger attacked the traffic cops and damaged the police PCR van at Bhestan when the police tried to intercept him.

Yusuf Khan, a notorious bootlegger in Surat tried to attack the traffic constable at the Bhestan traffic junction by circling in his Scorpio car and later collided with the PCR van and escaped from the spot. The car has been recovered by the police from a garage in the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli (DNH). However, the accused bootlegger is still at large.

Accused Yusuf Khan, who was arrested in the prohibition case in January, rammed the PCR van several times from the front and rear side with his black coloured Scorpio car. A compalint in this connection has been registered by the Bhestan police.

Police said that the accused bootlegger is notorious and involved in many crimes reported in the city. Yusuf Khan first abused the police constable and then asked the constable Gunjan who was standing on the spot to leave the spot. The accused grabbed police constable Gunjan from his belt and pushed him away.

The bootlegger’s Scorpio was also damaged when it hit the PCR van. After committing the incident, the accused fled to Silvassa to repair his Scorpio car. Now Bhestan police have seized this car and are conducting further investigation. However, top police officials are saying that the bootlegger accused will be arrested within 24 hours.

It must be noted that the driver of a trailer truck was arrested from Rajasthan on Wednesday for allegedly fatally injuring sub-inspector J M Pathan of the State Monitoring Cell (SMC) at a makeshift checkpoint in Kathada village of Dasada district, Surendranagar, on Nov 5.

“The accused, identified as Mangaram, was tracked down using technical analysis and human intelligence to Sindhri village in Rajasthan’s Balotra district,” read a statement from the Ahmedabad rural police. “He was brought to Ahmedabad for further questioning. The trailer involved in the accident had continued its journey to West Bengal, with another driver taking over in a shift change. An LCB team has been dispatched to West Bengal to retrieve the trailer for investigation,” the statement added.
