Surat : Four young Gujarati individuals from Godhra and Anand districts in Gujarat lost their lives in a tragic road accident in Toronto, Canada, on Wednesday night. The group was traveling in a Tesla car when it crashed into a pillar and burst into flames, leading to a devastating incident that has left their families in deep shock.

The accident, which occurred around 12:10 a.m. on Lake Shore Boulevard near Cherry Street in downtown Toronto, Canada involved three men and two women, all aged between 20 and 30. Among the deceased were a brother-sister duo, Neelraj Gohil and Ketaba Gohil, from Godhra, and two youths, Digvijay Patel and Jay Sisodia, from Borsad in Anand district. Reports suggest that the car lost control, hit a guardrail, and then crashed into a concrete pillar, resulting in a fire that engulfed the vehicle.

According to Toronto Police Deputy Inspector Philip Sinclair, the car’s fenders were blown off during the collision, which intensified the flames. Witnesses at the scene reported that a passing driver, seeing the vehicle on fire, managed to rescue one of the women, who was critically injured but survived. She was rushed to a nearby hospital and is currently receiving treatment.

The accident has raised concerns about the safety of electric vehicles, especially those powered by lithium-ion batteries. Toronto’s Deputy Fire Chief, Jim Jessop, noted that battery cells in the Tesla may have contributed to the severity of the fire. He mentioned that lithium-ion-powered devices are susceptible to thermal runaway, which can cause re-ignition even days after a fire is extinguished. While investigations are ongoing, the fire department is being cautious and preparing for similar incidents in the future.

The tragic incident has cast a pall of grief over the families of the victims. Neelraj and Ketaba Gohil were children of Sanjaysinh Gohil, a retired employee of Panchmahal District Bank in Godhra. Family members are in deep sorrow, and the news has shocked the local community. Malvdeepsinhji Raulji, a relative of the Gohil family, expressed his condolences and said that efforts are being made, with assistance from the District Collector and local politicians, to bring the bodies back to India as soon as possible. “We have reached out to the Government of India to expedite the process so that the families can have closure,” he added.

The Gohil siblings had moved to Canada for better career prospects. While Ketaba had been living there for five years, Neelraj had moved just nine months ago and was working as a lab technician. Both had settled in Brampton, along with friends from Gujarat, including the other two deceased, Jay Sisodia and Digvijay Patel. Jay, a resident of Borsad and son of Professor Harendrasinh Sisodia of Bhadran College, was known for his helpful nature. Having recently acquired Canadian citizenship, he often assisted other young Gujaratis who moved to Canada for studies and work.

Canadian media reports indicate that the group had been returning from a birthday celebration when the accident occurred. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but authorities suspect a technical fault in the car’s battery system may have played a role.

The incident has once again highlighted the need for safety precautions regarding electric vehicles. Deputy Fire Chief Jessop emphasized the growing threat of battery-related fires and said that Toronto Fire Service is taking proactive measures to address these concerns. However, it is too early to determine if the Tesla’s battery was directly responsible for the tragedy, and the investigation will continue to uncover further details.

In India, news of the accident has sparked an outpouring of grief and condolences from political leaders and the local community. Many have visited the families of the victims to offer support during this difficult time. Former Congress MLA Rajendrasinh Parmar, who is related to Jay Sisodia, expressed his sorrow, saying, “Jay was a bright and promising young man. This is a huge loss not only to his family but to everyone who knew him.”
