Daman : The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Daman Campus organized a vibrant fashion show and handloom weaving workshop, highlighting the pivotal role of weavers in preserving India’s cultural and traditional heritage. The event aimed to bring greater recognition and financial stability to craftspeople and weavers, showcasing their invaluable contributions to the fashion industry.

The fashion show by NIFT Daman, themed around handloom, was a dazzling display of creativity and skill by the students of Fashion Management and Textile Design. The campus ramp came alive with stunning handloom-inspired creations, each piece a testament to the students’ talent and dedication. These creations not only celebrated the rich tradition of Indian handloom but also underscored the potential for innovation within this timeless craft.

Complementing the fashion show was a handloom weaving workshop and bazaar featuring the age-old Bhujodi Handloom. This provided a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the traditional craft, learning the intricate techniques and appreciating the painstaking effort involved in handloom weaving. The workshop aimed to bridge the gap between contemporary fashion education and traditional handloom practices, fostering a deeper understanding and respect for this heritage craft.

The event was inaugurated by Jithin Goyal, Finance & Education Secretary of Dadra Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu. In his opening remarks,  Goyal emphasized the importance of integrating handloom into academic curricula, urging students to champion handloom fabrics on an international stage. He highlighted the potential for value addition and global exposure that could significantly benefit the weavers.

“Handloom is not just a craft; it’s a symbol of our cultural identity and history,” said  Goyal. “The Charka played a crucial role in uniting Indians during the freedom struggle, and today, it continues to symbolize self-reliance and empowerment. By embracing handloom, we honor our heritage and support the weavers who keep this tradition alive.”

The fashion show and workshop drew enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and local artisans. The event served as a platform for students to engage directly with the weavers, gaining firsthand experience of the challenges and intricacies involved in handloom weaving. It also provided a marketplace for the weavers to showcase and sell their products, contributing to their financial stability.

The NIFT Daman Campus’s initiative to celebrate and promote handloom weaving aligns with broader efforts to preserve India’s rich textile heritage. By fostering a connection between traditional weavers and the next generation of fashion designers, the event highlighted the enduring relevance and beauty of handloom crafts in contemporary fashion.
