Surat Police Beat the Heat with Green Traffic Signal Nets

SURAT, GUJARAT : Surat is experiencing a blistering heatwave, with temperatures rising above 43 degrees Celsius. Commuters, particularly two-wheeler riders, bear the brunt of the relentless sun as they wait at traffic lights. However, the Surat police have launched an innovative initiative to bring much-needed aid.

“Under the scorching heat, commuters find it difficult to stop at intersections when traffic lights turn red,” said a Surat police spokesperson. To solve this issue, the department has installed green shade nets at specific junctions throughout the city.

While the nets provide some shade, commuters have applauded the endeavour. “At least the green nets erected on the traffic signals provide partial relief from the scorching sun,” says Rajesh Buddadeb, a marketer. “The heat is so extreme that you can’t stop your car in the blistering sun without seeking shelter. I admire the Surat police’s initiative.

Sujal Mistry, an interior designer, shares Buddadeb’s sentiment. “The Surat police initiative is laudable, and it should be replicated in all cities across Gujarat. “Green net shades provide temporary relief from the scorching sun when you stop at a traffic light,” he says.

A police official who requested anonymity stated, “We attempted this experiment at the Athwalines traffic signal and a few other signals. The commuters’ response has been fairly good. This concept will be extended to additional traffic signals throughout the city.”

The Surat police’s green net solution is a simple but efficient technique to battle the blazing heat and provide commuters with a somewhat more comfortable wait at traffic signals. With the heatwave forecast to continue, this project will provide a pleasant relief for the city’s people.
