Surat : Gujarat BJP president CR Paatil, who is running for re-election for the fourth consecutive term from the Navsari Lok Sabha constituency, is currently facing controversy due to a complaint filed against him with the Election Commission. An allegation has been made against Paatil, claiming that he violated the model code of conduct by allegedly inciting religious animosity and provoking the minority community during a public rally in Diyodar, Gujarat.

A complaint has been filed by Aslam Cyclewala, a former Congress councillor from Surat, with the Chief Election Commissioner, requesting legal action to be taken against Paatil for his remarks. Cyclewala claims that Paatil’s speech at the rally in Diyodar included appealing to religious emotions and distorting the Congress party’s manifesto.

As reported by Cyclewala, Paatil made a speech where he allegedly made false claims about the Congress manifesto, suggesting that it promises property redistribution to Muslims and appealing for votes on religious grounds. Surprisingly, the Congress manifesto does not include any mention of such a provision. In addition, Paatil allegedly made remarks about Muslims being infiltrators, which has only heightened tensions.

Cyclewala argues that Paatil’s remarks are unfounded and potentially harmful, as they directly target the Muslim community. He claims that this kind of provocative language could upset the feelings of many law-abiding Indian citizens, especially those who are part of the Muslim community.

Urgently calling for action, Cyclewala has requested the registration of a FIR against Paatil under sections 153A, 295A, and 298 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) 1860. In addition, he has strongly advised the authorities to take legal action against Paatil for defamation, citing his alleged intention to tarnish the reputation of a national political party with false accusations.

The allegations against Paatil have surfaced at a critical moment in the electoral process, prompting concerns about the ethical behaviour of political leaders and the importance of maintaining fair campaign practices. As the Election Commission considers the complaint, it is clear that maintaining civility and respect in political discourse is crucial, especially in diverse and pluralistic societies like India.

Paatil’s response to the allegations is still pending, as the controversy surrounding his remarks continues to have a significant impact on the political landscape of Gujarat. Amidst the intensifying electoral competition, all eyes are fixed on the behaviour of candidates and their commitment to democratic values in their quest for power.
