Surat : In a fervent plea for justice, social workers in Surat are urging the local police to withdraw serious charges, including those under the POSCO Act and IT Act, filed against Tushar Basia, a journalist from Navjivan News. The charges stem from his coverage of a distressing incident captured in a viral video, depicting the sexual harassment of a minor girl by an unidentified man on the streets. The case raises concerns about the suppression of media freedom, drawing attention to the delicate balance between journalistic duty and legal repercussions.

The shocking video, which surfaced on social media platforms on January 12, showcased an unidentified man sexually harassing a minor girl. Surprisingly, no formal complaint was registered by the Surat Police regarding this grave matter. In a bid to shed light on the incident, journalist Tushar Basia, associated with Navjivan News, proactively reached out to Police Inspector Rathod of Singanpore police station for an official statement.

During the conversation with PI Rathod, it was revealed that no complaint had been filed as the complainant chose not to pursue legal action. The absence of an official complaint, even after 12 days, raises questions about the police’s diligence in handling such a serious case. Instead of commending the journalist for fulfilling his duty, Tushar Basia now finds himself facing charges in Singanpore police station for allegedly exposing the truth.

Social workers argue that the case against Tushar Basia reflects an alarming attempt to stifle the voice of the media. They highlight the contradiction between the charges leveled against the journalist and the principles outlined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees the right to freedom of opinion and expression. The article emphasizes the freedom to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas through any media, without interference.

The legal proceedings against Tushar Basia raise concerns about the broader implications for media freedom. Social activists, including Sanjay Ezhava, assert that the journalist was merely fulfilling his duty by bringing attention to an incident that warranted public scrutiny. The case prompts a critical examination of the delicate balance between the responsibilities of journalists and the potential legal consequences they may face for performing their essential role in society.
