Ahmedabad : Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPI) in Gujarat has cemented its position as a major aviation hub, breaking national and international records for passenger traffic and aircraft movements. This surge in activity comes amidst ongoing infrastructure upgrades and unwavering dedication from airport staff.

The most recent feather in SVPI’s cap is the record for the highest number of passengers traveling through the airport in a single day. During the Cricket World Cup final matches, passenger traffic soared to an impressive 42,224 on November 20th. This wasn’t an isolated event – for three consecutive days, the airport witnessed exceptional passenger movement, showcasing its ability to handle large crowds efficiently.

But the records don’t stop there. On November 19th, SVPI Airport also recorded the highest number of aircraft movements in a single day, with 359 planes taking off and landing. This achievement was further amplified by the highest ever non-scheduled flight movement record, with 99 non-commercial flights operating within the same timeframe.

These remarkable accomplishments are a testament to the ongoing infrastructure updates and constant improvements at SVPI Airport. The dedication and hard work of all airport staff, including AAI, CISF, Immigration, Customs, airline partners, and the SVPI airport team itself, have played a crucial role in achieving these milestones.

Without modifications and infrastructural improvements, travellers cannot be comfortable. Infrastructure creation, improvement, and use were priorities this year. In the Domestic terminal, the year began with a new security check area, 50% more space, higher seating capacity and more X-ray scanners and metal detectors. E-gates were implemented this year to further secure technology.

In addition, passenger drop-off and pick-up locations were established outside domestic ports. With just 2 lanes, family and friends had few alternatives for picking up and dropping off people. They now have 6 lanes, greater parking, additional seating, and more refreshments.

New airlines introduced overseas destinations for Ahmedabad airport travellers. Ahmedabad airport welcomed Fly Bagdad and Thai Airasia in one year. Viet Jet flies daily between two Vietnamese locations; Fly Bagdad flies twice weekly to Najaf. Three times a week, Thai AirAsia serves Don Nueang. Other airlines boosted frequency and destinations this year. A Turkish freighter and Malaysian airline’s four-weekly direct route to Kuala Lumpur began this year.

Airlines launched new routes from Ahmedabad to Pantnagar, Srinagar, Diu, Jaisalmer, and Agartala via Kolkata, Durgapur via Delhi, Coimbatore via Hyderabad and Chennai, Visakhapatnam via Hyderabad, Port Blair via Chennai, Nashik, Goa-MOPA, Pune, Kolkata, and Lucknow

Ahmedabad airport hosted the Cricket World Cup and G20 meetings in 2023. Airport investment in infrastructure and connectivity shows its commitment to Gujarat’s progress.

“These records are a clear indication of the immense potential of SVPI Airport,” said a spokesperson for the airport. “We are committed to providing world-class services and facilities to our passengers, and these achievements are a strong validation of our efforts. We are confident that SVPI will continue to soar to new heights in the years to come.”
