Gujarat Semiconductor Policy Aims for 2L Jobs in 5 Yrs

Gandhinagar : The Gujarat government has set its sights on creating over two lakh employment opportunities in the next five years with its Semiconductor Policy and the entry of Micron technologies.

An official from the government expressed that Micron Technologies making its foray into India via Gujarat marks a significant milestone for the state’s development. The establishment of Micron’s plant in Sanand is anticipated to redefine India’s stature in semiconductor manufacturing.

The foundation stone for Micron’s new assembly and test facility was laid approximately three months ago, with a project cost of Rs 22,500 crore. Spanning across 93 acres in Sanand GIDC, the plant is slated to commence operations within the next one and a half years.

Driven by the vision to position Gujarat as a global hub for Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) and Semiconductor production, the state has taken pioneering steps by introducing distinctive policies for Electronics Manufacturing (2022-28) and Semiconductor Manufacturing (2022-27) – becoming the first state in India to do so, aligning with the India Semiconductor Mission.

These policies have been meticulously crafted to facilitate and encourage manufacturing activities in Gujarat, recognizing the extensive use of semiconductor chips, particularly in defense and telecommunications.

The Gujarat Government has actively engaged in meetings and roadshows across the country and abroad to promote the biennial Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024. Presently, a high-level delegation led by Gujarat’s Chief Minister, Bhupendra Patel, is in Japan for this purpose.

The official highlighted that the outreach initiatives have connected with more than 1000 companies so far. Companies from Japan, South Korea, as well as Indian-based companies from New Delhi and Bengaluru, have shown keen interest in exploring investment opportunities in the region. Their focus extends to research & development in semiconductor industries, assembly testing, packaging, and manufacturing of critical components essential for the semiconductor industry, alongside the establishment of Engineering/technology centers.

Notable companies engaged during the International roadshows in this domain include Mitsui & Co. (Japan), Sharm Corporation (Japan), Avanstrate (Japan), Hosiden (Japan), and Simmtech (South Korea).

Additionally, companies met during National roadshows comprise Seoul Semiconductors, V-Guard, LAM Research, Dell Technologies, Marvel Technologies, and NXP Semiconductors. Ongoing discussions are underway with various international and national companies to initiate additional large-scale projects in Gujarat.
