Labour Department Sends Notice Despite Laxmi Diamond’s Efforts to Reinstate Workers

Surat : Laxmi Diamond, the world’s leading DTC (De Beers) sightholder company, has received a notice from the Labour Commissioner’s office to submit their response within 15 days, despite the company’s serious efforts to reinstate the diamond workers on their jobs.

In response to the Labour department’s notice, Laxmi Diamond has stated to The Blunt Times that despite sending letters to the diamond workers twice via Registered Post, urging them to return to their respective jobs, the workers have not reported for work.

The issue revolves around 12 diamond workers who approached the labour department, with four workers already returning to work after withdrawing their applications in the labour court. However, the remaining eight workers are refusing to resume their duties, backed by the Gujarat Diamond Workers Union (GDWU).

It is noteworthy that the vice-president of GDWU led the diamond workers in a demonstration outside the Surat district collector’s office, demanding justice and reinstatement of the workers by Laxmi Diamonds.

Laxmi Diamonds, a prominent diamond and jewellery manufacturing company based in Surat, has been conducting its polished diamonds and jewellery business from various locations across India. Earlier, GDWU claimed that approximately 300 workers were laid off by Laxmi Diamonds. Following the demonstration and dharna program, the company rehired 150 employees out of the total 300.

The company spokesperson stated, “Laxmi Diamonds has sent two letters to call the workers to rejoin the factory via Registered Postal Ad.  Four diamond workers have withdrawn their applications filed with the Labour Department, while the remaining eight workers are still unwilling to resume their work. These 8 workers are demanding wages from the time they started agitation, which is totally unfair”
