Mumbai : Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadnavis handed out helmets made in a collaboration between Universal Sompo General Insurance and Yashlok Welfare Foundation to the Mumbai Traffic Police as part of an effort to improve road safety by educating and training the city’s underprivileged population.

Together, Yashlok Welfare Foundation and Universal Sompo General Insurance will help the disabled, disadvantaged women, and young people of India to build secure financial futures. Benefitees of this innovative skill development programme were given the opportunity to get a job making helmets for the Mumbai Traffic Police. These helmets will be a vital tool in the fight to raise public awareness about the importance of taking precautions when travelling on Mumbai’s roads. Out of a total of 2,600 helmets, Universal Sompo General Insurance Company has generously contributed 1,000 to the Mumbai Traffic Police Department.

CEO and MD of Universal Sompo General Insurance Sharad Mathur made the following remarks: “Road accidents have become quite regular due to vehicle collisions and ignorance of adequate road safety measures. The number of people hurt or killed in an accident may be drastically reduced if more people routinely used safety equipment like helmets and seat belts. As a way to show their support, Universal Sompo is donating recycled plastic helmets to the cause. Poor and disabled women work together to make these helmets. Moreover, Mathur stated, “Helmets would be worn by Mumbai Traffic Police and will operate as a tool to promote road safety awareness across Mumbai city.”

According to Alok Adhikari, the foundation’s founder, “Yashlok Welfare Foundation was formed with the purpose of empowering poor individuals by up-skilling them and allowing access to a sustainable source of work.”
