Surat : Surat witnessed communal tensions after an incident of stone pelting during the recent Ganesh festival in the Syedpura area. The aftermath of this event has led to controversy surrounding the celebrations of Eid Milad-un-Nabi, the annual observance marking the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad.

Following the stone pelting incident on September 8, Muslim community leaders in Surat took a cautious approach, appealing to limit the Tajia procession or obtain police permission before proceeding with it. This decision was aimed at maintaining peace and avoiding potential clashes.

However, this appeal faced backlash and was met with criticism on social media platforms, allegedly inciting communal hatred. In response, a complaint was filed at Surat’s Lal Gate police station against 11 individuals, including prominent figures such as a Surat Congress leader and Aslam Cyclewala, a leader from the minority community. They were accused of spreading animosity within the city through their statements and actions.

The complaint, lodged by the Congress ward president and minority community activist, highlighted concerns over attempts to disrupt communal harmony in Surat. It specifically pointed fingers at Aslam Cyclewala for allegedly leading the communication efforts that incited discord.

In defense, Aslam Cyclewala denied the allegations, stating that the complaint was politically motivated. “The complainant is associated with Congress and has been influenced by higher political agendas since our opposition in the 2022 assembly elections,” he stated. “I stand by the principles of Congress and advocate for peace and harmony in the city. I have requested an impartial investigation into these allegations and am willing to cooperate fully.”

The Surat police have initiated an investigation into the matter, acknowledging the seriousness of the allegations and the potential impact on communal relations. The case underscores ongoing tensions and the delicate balance required during religious and cultural celebrations in diverse communities.

Congress leaders have expressed support for an unbiased inquiry, affirming their commitment to upholding peace and condemning any actions that could jeopardize communal harmony in Surat. They have urged for a thorough examination to ensure justice and maintain the city’s reputation for peaceful coexistence among its diverse populace.
