VadodaraA tragic incident occurred near Kalaghoda Bridge in Vadodara on Monday, as a woman lost her life after being attacked and dragged into the Vishwamitri River by a crocodile. Despite efforts by local residents and the fire department, the woman could not be saved. The incident has raised concerns about safety near the river, which is known for its crocodile population.

The incident took place early in the morning when local residents witnessed a crocodile attacking a woman and dragging her into the Vishwamitri River, about 100 meters from Kalaghoda Bridge. Alarmed by the sight, they immediately alerted the fire department, prompting a swift response.

According to the fire department, a call was received at the Command & Control Centre around 8:00 AM. The Dandiya Bazar fire team was dispatched to the scene and encountered significant challenges in retrieving the woman’s body due to the presence of four to five crocodiles in the water. Despite the difficulties, the rescue team managed to recover the body after a half-hour struggle and subsequently informed the police.

Fireman Manoj Sitapara, who participated in the rescue, described the situation as extremely tense. “We rushed to the spot immediately after receiving the call. When we arrived, the crocodile was still pulling the woman’s body further into the water, and other crocodiles were circling nearby. It took us about half an hour to retrieve the body from the crocodile’s grip,” Sitapara stated.

The woman, estimated to be between 45 and 50 years old, was taken to Sayaji Hospital for a postmortem examination. Authorities are working to identify the victim and notify her family.

The Vishwamitri River is known for its crocodile population, and incidents of crocodile sightings near urban areas are not uncommon. However, attacks on humans are rare, making this incident particularly shocking. Residents have expressed conerns over safety near the riverbanks, calling for increased measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
