Surat, Gujarat – Manmohan Singh, group executive president of Birla Cellulose has said that Surat, the man-made textile (MMF) hub has a unique ecosystem in itself. Surat currently requires 10,000 tons of yarn, which is likely to increase to 20,000 tons in the next three years. Currently, 2,000 tons of yarn are produced in Surat, while the rest is imported from other countries. Singh said this during the inauguration of the WeaveKnitt 2025 exhibition organised by the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) at SIECC, Sarsana in Surat on Friday.

According to Singh, the highest valuation in the textile industry is in garmenting. Garmenting, as an industry,  has already started in Surat. Apart from this, investment is coming in women’s kurtis. He further said that by the year 2030, when there will be a shortage of 2,000 tons of cotton per day in India, viscose and modal–Viscose and modal are both types of rayon, a man-made fabric derived from natural cellulose–will be the first choice of people.

The inauguration ceremony held on Friday was attended by Chief Guest and Inaugural speaker, Manmohan Singh, Group Executive President, Birla Cellulose – Grasim Industries Limited, and  D.M. Jadeja, Joint Commissioner of Industries, Government of Gujarat .

SGCCI president, Nikhil Madrasi said that while the  textile and weaving industries are the backbone of Surat’s economy, the Weaveknitt  Exhibition is an excellent platform for networking and learning about new technologies for industrialists and buyers. Apart from increasing trade, such exhibitions are also an attempt to connect the new generation with the industry. The SGCCI is constantly trying to take Surat’s textile industry forward at the national and international level. He further said that the Regional Vibrant Gujarat Summit for South Gujarat will be organized by the  SGCCI in Surat in collaboration with the Gujarat Government.

D.M. Jadeja, Joint Commissioner of Industries, Government of Gujarat, said that the exhibition organized by the SGCCI works to change the mindset of the industry. When technology has changed world over, entrepreneurs will also have to move forward very quickly by adopting new technology in business. For this, the Government of Gujarat helps the entrepreneurs starting from business concepts to product sales. There are many schemes by the government, taking advantage of which one can venture into the industry.

He said that the best infrastructure for doing business in India is in Gujarat. Instead of working, the youth are now starting industries and businesses and providing jobs. He further said that the SGCCI receives the most submissions for the development of trade and industry, which we are trying to resolve.

Chamber of Commerce Vice President Ashok Jirawala thanked the participants present at the exhibition and said that the Weaveknitt organized by the Chamber of Commerce will give a new direction to textile entrepreneurs not only from Surat but also from all over India to move forward in business.

SGCCI’s All Exhibitions Chairman  Kiran Thummar gave detailed information about the Weaveknitt Exhibition and said that more than 15,000 buyers and visitors will visit the exhibition from all over the country during the three days.
