In a country where electricity is more than infrastructure, it is opportunity, dignity, and survival, Dr. Sachin Shigwan, widely known as The Solar Man of India, has emerged as one of the most impactful champions of rural electrification and sustainable development. With over 15 years of leadership in renewable energy, social entrepreneurship, and CSR implementation, Dr. Shigwan has spearheaded initiatives that have brought reliable solar power to more than 1,150 villages across 14 Indian states, transforming the lives of over 100,000 people.
Yet, this nationwide mission began with a deeply personal moment.
In 2009, during a rural development visit with Rotary, Dr. Shigwan saw children studying under dim kerosene lamps, an image that mirrored his own childhood struggles. That moment crystallized a singular purpose: to eliminate energy poverty through clean, accessible, and sustainable solutions. This conviction led to the founding of Green India Initiative Pvt. Ltd. (GIIPL) in 2014, a for-profit social enterprise designed to deliver scalable renewable energy solutions to India’s most underserved communities.
As Founder and Managing Director, Dr. Shigwan has built GIIPL into a trusted execution partner for corporates and institutions seeking high-impact CSR implementation. The organization delivers end-to-end project execution, from engineering and procurement to installation and long-term maintenance, ensuring transparency, accountability, and sustainability. Its solutions span solar home lighting systems, street lighting, electrification of schools and healthcare centers, water pumping systems, and livelihood-supporting infrastructure, creating ecosystems of development rather than isolated interventions.
What truly distinguishes Dr. Shigwan’s work is his focus on last-mile reliability. Each project is customized to local terrain, climate, and social realities. Community members are trained to manage and maintain systems, ensuring long-term ownership and resilience. This model not only ensures operational sustainability but also builds local capacity, turning beneficiaries into stakeholders. In doing so, GIIPL actively contributes to India’s commitment to UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy, while significantly reducing carbon emissions in remote regions.
Dr. Shigwan’s impact has earned global recognition. A two-time World Record holder honored by the World Book of Records (London) and India’s World Records, his accolades include the Karmaveer Puraskar, Social Entrepreneur of the Year, Most Trusted CSR Consultant, and multiple national honors. He has also been recognized among the Top 40 and Top 100 Leaders Under 40, and received the Bharat Pratibha Sanmaan 2025 for contributions to renewable energy and social development.
Beyond infrastructure, Dr. Shigwan is deeply invested in building awareness and climate leadership. Through the Employee Solar Ambassador Program (Light A Life), he has conducted over 150 workshops, training more than 20,000 individuals, from students to corporate leaders, on renewable energy adoption and climate responsibility. As a TEDx Speaker, he has addressed platforms including TEDx Kirtinagar and TEDx BHIS Kanpur, advocating for sustainable development and inclusive growth.
Armed with an MBA in Social Entrepreneurship and an Honorary Doctorate, Dr. Shigwan represents a new generation of social engineers, leaders who blend technical innovation with human-centered design. As a CSR consultant, he enables organizations to align business objectives with measurable environmental and social impact, transforming corporate responsibility into strategic nation-building.
Today, The Solar Man of India is not merely a title, it is a movement. A movement that replaces darkness with opportunity, dependency with self-reliance, and environmental risk with sustainable progress. Under Dr. Sachin Shigwan’s leadership, and through the continued work of Green India Initiative, thousands of villages are lighting up, not only with electricity, but with hope, economic potential, and a future powered by possibility.
