Surat | Gujarat — In a dramatic twist that has sent shockwaves through civic and political circles, senior officer Swati Desai has withdrawn her resignation from the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), barely ten days after stepping down from her post as Deputy Commissioner.
Desai, a seasoned officer who has served the civic body for nearly two decades, had abruptly submitted her resignation to the Municipal Commissioner, catching the administration off guard. Her decision to quit just ahead of the crucial general budget meeting triggered intense speculation and debate within municipal corridors.
While no official reason was cited in her resignation, multiple theories were doing the rounds. Sources claimed she was allegedly facing sustained pressure and criticism from certain opposition members within the corporation. Others linked her move to controversy surrounding the supply of recycled water to a company in Hazira, a matter that reportedly dragged her name into political crossfire.
However, insiders suggested a more personal reason. “She felt she was unable to devote adequate time to her family after years of demanding service,” a source close to the development said.
In a significant U-turn, Desai reversed her decision even before her resignation proposal could be placed before the standing committee for approval. According to sources, sustained persuasion from family members, elders and close friends played a decisive role in her change of heart.
“After careful thought and discussions with my well-wishers, I have decided to continue my responsibilities in the interest of the city,” Desai is learnt to have conveyed in her letter withdrawing the resignation.
Her return, however, has ignited fresh political friction. The opposition in SMC has demanded that she be relieved from the influential accounts department, arguing that an officer who had chosen to resign should not continue in such a critical financial role.
“It is inappropriate to entrust key financial responsibilities to someone who had stepped down. Administrative stability is paramount,” an opposition corporator stated.
While the administration has reportedly reassigned her from the Smart City portfolio, she continues to hold charge of the accounts department — a move that has further intensified the debate.
