Surat, Gujarat — A shocking incident has rocked Bhatha village on the outskirts of Surat where three senior citizens died under suspicious circumstances, suspected to be caused by smoke inhalation from a generator running in a closed room. The deceased have been identified as Balubhai Kachrabhai Patel (76), Sitaben Anilbhai Rathod (56), and Vedaben Balwantbhai Rathod (60).
According to initial reports, the incident occurred overnight when all three slept in a closed room at Bhatha village in Surat, where a generator had been running. When family members went to check on them in the morning, they found the trio unconscious. Emergency services were called immediately, but all three were declared dead on the spot.
Pal Police Station Inspector K. L. Gadh confirmed, “Our PCR van received a call early in the morning from Bhatha village about three people found dead. When we arrived, the room was closed and a foul smell was emanating. The generator was still inside the room. There was no ventilation, which likely caused smoke accumulation.”
The two women, Sitaben and Vedaben, had come from Kosamba on Thursday to take Balubhai back home after the recent demise of his wife. “It was a customary visit after his wife’s death,” said a family source. Balubhai, who worked as a watchman in nearby fields, had been living alone since then.
The police have sent the bodies to Surat Civil Hospital for postmortem and have sought assistance from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to determine the exact cause of death.
“Prima facie, it appears to be a case of asphyxiation due to generator smoke, but we will know for sure only after the FSL and PM reports are in,” added Inspector Gadh.
