SURAT : The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC)-run Nagar Prathamik Shikshan Samiti has once again landed in controversy, this time over the alleged brutal assault of a six-year-old kindergarten student by a teacher. The shocking incident comes soon after the death of a Class 9 student in another SMC-run school due to an alleged short circuit, raising fresh questions over student safety and accountability in civic schools.

The latest incident occurred at School No. 42, Khudiram Bose Nagar Primary Education Committee School in Bhathena, Udhna, where a classroom teacher allegedly beat a six-year-old child with a stick, leaving severe injury marks across his body. The child had previously undergone open-heart surgery and suffers from delayed mental development. His family said the school authorities had already been informed about his medical condition.

After returning home, the child cried in pain for hours. When his parents changed his clothes, they found deep stick marks on his back, chest, thighs and neck, with dried blood visible on the injuries. He was immediately rushed to Surat Civil Hospital for treatment.

“My child had been telling us for days that he was being beaten, but we thought he was avoiding school,” the boy’s mother said. “When we saw the injuries, we were shocked. Even after informing the school, the principal simply told us to come back the next day because the teachers had already left.”

The family’s anger grew after they alleged that the school administration failed to respond with urgency. According to them, the principal cited the absence of the headmaster and shortage of staff instead of taking immediate action.

Chairman of the Nagar Primary Education Committee Rajendra Kapadia said a preliminary inquiry found that the regular kindergarten teacher was away for training and another teacher was handling multiple classes. The child had reportedly wandered into another classroom several times before the teacher allegedly lost patience and assaulted him.

“Physical punishment of children will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” Kapadia said. “An inquiry committee has been formed, and strict disciplinary as well as legal action will be taken if the allegations are found to be true.”
