Surat, Gujarat — In a serious breach of cyber security, the official X (formerly Twitter) account of Surat Police was hacked by an unidentified person, causing major embarrassment to the city’s law enforcement. The hacker renamed the account to “Surat Arena Police” and went on to upload objectionable videos, shocking citizens and officials alike.
The incident has raised grave concerns about the digital vulnerability of government systems, especially those run by the very agency responsible for ensuring public safety.
“We have stopped all further uploads on the account and have taken control of the situation,” said a spokesperson from Surat Police Headquarters.
“This is not just a social media breach—it’s a direct attack on law enforcement credibility,” said a senior official from Surat Cyber Cell.
This case has taken a unique turn, as instead of the usual cybercrime unit handling external hacking cases, the Surat Cyber Cell itself has taken over the investigation—because the victim is Surat Police itself.
“We are treating this as a top-priority case,” said an officer from the Cyber Cell. “We are tracing the IP addresses and digital footprint of the hacker. No matter how skilled they are, they will not go unpunished.”
Authorities suspect the hack may have originated from international IP addresses to mask the hacker’s location, a tactic commonly used in high-profile breaches. However, the police remain confident of identifying the perpetrators soon.
Meanwhile, efforts are underway to restore the hacked account and remove the offensive content. The cyber team has also contacted X (formerly Twitter) to speed up the recovery process and provide backend logs for forensic analysis.
“This incident underscores the urgent need for stronger cyber protocols, especially for official government accounts,” said a senior cyber expert assisting the case.
The Surat Police are now reviewing all official digital infrastructure to ensure that multi-factor authentication, stronger passwords, and dedicated cyber monitoring are enforced across the board.
