Surat | Gujarat — Surat witnessed a historic moment as the city turned the spotlight on its sanitation workers during the nationwide celebration of Seva Pakhwada marking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday. In a grand program at the indoor stadium, Union Minister for Jal Shakti, CR Paatil, announced a welfare fund of ₹10 crore dedicated to the well-being of over 6,000 sanitation workers employed with the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).

Speaking at the event, Patil emphasized that the initiative was “not just a fortnight-long campaign but a continuous movement of service and gratitude that will extend till Diwali.” He added that service-oriented programs would be carried out in line with upcoming festivals to ensure that the benefits of various government schemes reach people at the grassroots.

Fund for Education and Welfare

The ₹10 crore fund, contributed by citizens of Surat and prominent donors, will be deposited in the SMC’s account to exclusively support the sanitation workers and their families. Patil revealed that the primary focus would be on children’s education, covering expenses for accommodation, books, and tuition for those pursuing higher studies.

“This initiative is the first of its kind in the country. The children of our sanitation workers deserve every opportunity to study and build a better future. Through this fund, we aim to remove financial barriers,” Paatil said, drawing loud applause from the crowd.

Additionally, sanitation employees will be eligible for interest-free loans to purchase homes or two-wheelers, a move aimed at uplifting their standard of living.

Dignity and Respect for Workers

Paatil urged Surat residents to honor the sanitation workers who play a crucial role in making Surat one of India’s cleanest cities. “Whenever they come to your homes, do not just meet them at the doorstep. Invite them inside, treat them with dignity, offer them breakfast or small gifts. Such gestures will strengthen their morale and give them their rightful place in society,” he appealed.

Inclusion Beyond Sanitation Workers

The Seva Pakhwada celebration also extended its support to the differently-abled community. At the event, 21 specially designed bicycles were distributed to differently-abled citizens, further underlining the inclusive spirit of the campaign.

A Model for the Nation

The grand felicitation of sanitation workers and the announcement of a dedicated welfare fund has set a benchmark for social responsibility. Many in attendance expressed that Surat’s model could inspire other cities to adopt similar welfare initiatives.

“This is not charity, it is respect. Our sanitation workers have kept the city shining, and now it is our turn to shine their lives,” said one donor who contributed to the fund.
