Surat : The Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Limited (DGVCL) has begun its smart meter rollout in Surat, marking a significant shift towards a more digital and efficient electricity distribution system. Piplod sub-division takes the lead, with the first smart meter installed at Suman Cell on Monday. This initiative aims to equip a total of 1.83 lakh consumers in the area with these advanced meters.

These smart meters introduce a prepaid system, allowing consumers to use only the amount of electricity recharged. This offers greater control over electricity bills and eliminates concerns about hefty post-paid charges. Additionally, a minimum recharge of Rs. 100 ensures uninterrupted power supply.

But the benefits go beyond just budgeting. Smart meters come with a customer-friendly mobile app that provides real-time usage data. Consumers can monitor their consumption and compare it with previous months, enabling them to make informed choices about their electricity use.

Furthermore, the DGVCL guarantees uninterrupted power supply on weekends, a welcome change for residents. Even if a negative balance occurs (up to Rs. 300), the service continues with the option to recharge for continued use.

This project comes after extensive testing and monitoring of smart meters within DGVCL premises. The positive results paved the way for their rollout in Piplod. Notably, over 400 homes in Suman Cell apartments received smart meters on the first day. The team will closely monitor their performance in this initial phase before expanding to other areas of the city and district.

The implementation of smart meters in Surat signifies a major step towards a smarter and more responsible electricity management system. With increased control over consumption, real-time data access, and a focus on customer convenience, this initiative promises a positive impact on both energy efficiency and consumer satisfaction in the city.
