Surat Cricket Body Slammed Over Mayur Golwala Suspension

Surat | Gujarat — In a move that has sparked outrage within cricketing circles, the Surat District Cricket Association (SDCA) managing committee has suspended senior member and Hemant Contractor panel candidate Mayur Golwala for 45 days. His “crime”: speaking up against alleged irregularities and organizational lapses.

At Monday’s executive committee meeting, presided over by SDCA president Kanaiyalal Contractor, the committee passed a resolution to suspend Golwala on charges of “going to the media against the association.” The decision, however, was strongly opposed by members of the Hemant Contractor panel, including Esha Hemant Contractor, Akshara Contractor, and Mehak Narendra Gandhi, who termed it a blatant attempt to silence dissent.

According to SDCA Secretary Hitubhai Patel, the suspension stemmed from a complaint filed by Golwala regarding poor facilities at the association. Patel accused him of “false reporting,” claiming, “Mayurbhai complained that there was no water in the shower on a particular day and then got the matter published in the media. This was against the discipline of the organization, so the executive committee acted.”

But Golwala has hit back hard, describing the disciplinary action as vindictive and undemocratic.“I have not yet received the notice of suspension. If and when I do, I will challenge it in court. As a responsible member, I had raised a genuine inconvenience faced by players. Instead of addressing the issue, the committee chose to punish me. This is nothing but an attempt to cover up wrongdoings in the association,” Golwala told reporters.

He further warned that he would expose the “real wrongdoers” within SDCA once the matter reaches court.

Silencing dissent within SDCA?

The controversy has once again highlighted the internal power struggle within the SDCA, where the ruling Contractor panel has long faced accusations of suppressing voices from the opposition camp. Members opposing the suspension argue that punishing Golwala for raising a basic facility issue shows how intolerant the leadership has become.

A senior cricket insider, requesting anonymity, said, “This is not about showers or water supply. This is about silencing anyone who questions the management. Cricket administration in Surat is turning into a fiefdom where loyalty is rewarded and dissenters are punished.”

A legal battle ahead

With Golwala preparing to move court, the SDCA’s controversial decision could soon face judicial scrutiny. Legal experts suggest that suspending a member merely for speaking to the media may not stand legal ground, especially if the member was highlighting player welfare issues.
