Surat : In a story straight out of a crime thriller, the Preventive Crime Branch (PCB) of Surat police tracked down and arrested a fugitive murder suspect, Mohammed Umar alias Amar Abdul Rasheed Ansari, who had been evading capture for a staggering 21 years from Wasseypur in Jharkhand.
The dramatic operation involved days of undercover work in the high-risk Wasseypur area of Jharkhand, with officers posing as auto drivers to gain his trust.
“Twenty-one years of living in the shadows ended for Ansari thanks to relentless pursuit by our team,” declared a jubilant senior PCB official. “We camped in Wasseypur for seven days, driving an auto and blending in with the locals, before the opportunity to nab him finally arose.”
Ansari’s flight from justice began in May 2003, when he and his accomplice, Mehraj Ali, brutally murdered Dayashankar Shivcharan Gupta after a drunken brawl. However, the long arm of the law finally caught up.
“As per the directives of Surat police commissioner Ajay Kumar Tomar, we’ve been actively collecting and analyzing data on fugitive suspects under ‘Operation Farar,” explained another official. “Information led us to Ansari in Wasseypur, and a dedicated team swiftly swung into action.”
The arduous undercover operation paid off as Ansari was apprehended without resistance. During interrogation, he confessed to his role in Gupta’s murder, providing gruesome details of the crime.
This isn’t an isolated success for the PCB. 2023 has been a year of relentless pursuit for the unit, as they’ve nabbed a total of 22 long-term fugitives, including 16 for murder.
“This case is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our officers,” emphasized a PCB spokesperson. “Even after decades, we never give up on the pursuit of justice. No matter how long it takes, the scales of justice will always balance.”
