Surat : The Brackish Water Research Center (BWRC) based in Surat has raised alarm bells, appealing to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to launch an investigation into the recent breakdown of the Ghogha-Surat Ro-Ro (roll-on-roll-off) ferry service and irregularities surrounding the dredging operations and the alleged negligence of Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) officials.

A nerve-racking event unfolded on November 23 aboard the Ghogha-Surat Ro-Ro ferry, leaving approximately 500 passengers in a tense situation after the vessel experienced a breakdown and tilted to one side shortly after departing from the Ghogha jetty around 5:45 pm. The ferry remained stuck in shallow waters within the sea channel for over three hours, prompting concern for the safety of those on board.

In response to the emergent situation, the Bhavnagar district administration swiftly intervened, collaborating with the company overseeing the Ro-Ro ferry service to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers amidst the precarious condition of the vessel.

With over 500 passengers and more than 190 vehicles on board, the tilting of the ferry sparked apprehension among travelers. However, official sources confirmed that all passengers remained unharmed throughout the incident, and operations resumed as the water levels surged, facilitated by the incoming high tide.

Investigations revealed that the ferry, navigating from Ghogha in Bhavnagar to Hazira in Surat, deviated from its designated channel while attempting a turn, leading to the unprecedented situation. Authorities took immediate measures, deploying two tugboats to stabilize and ensure the safety of the vessel.

MHS Shaikh, president of BWRC, emphasized the significance of ensuring passenger safety on the Surat-Ghogha Ro-Ro ferry, operated by Deendayal Port Trust (DPT) under the Ministry of Shipping.

He highlighted the imperative nature of investigating the irregularities in dredging operations and the alleged negligence of GMB officials, linking these issues to the recent incident.

Shaikh stressed the necessity of prioritizing passenger safety and security in the operation of the Ro-Ro ferry for the public interest. We demand fair, neutral and actionable investigation to avoid any such kind of accident in Gulf of Cambay.
