Surat :In light of the current recession affecting Surat, the world’s largest diamond cutting and polishing hub, and the challenging economic situation faced by diamond artisans as the Diwali festival approaches, senior BJP MLA from Varachha constituency Kumar Kanani has reached out to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. He has requested the implementation of a robust ‘diamond policy’ similar to the textile policy 2024 that was announced by the government on Wednesday.

Kumar Kanani, the MLA of Varachha, frequently advocates for public issues. Kanani has reached out to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, urging the Gujarat Government to establish a robust ‘diamond policy’ aimed at enhancing the diamond sector and supporting the artisans.

In his letter, MLA Kanani expressed that the diamond industry has been enduring the challenges of recession for the past one-and-a-half years. As numerous diamond units have ceased operations, the diamond artisans find themselves either unemployed or facing significantly reduced working hours. The financial crisis among the artisan community in Surat has intensified as the Diwali festival approaches.

MLA Kumar Kanani emphasized that in conjunction with the announcement of the textile policy 2024, the government should also unveil a ‘diamond policy 2024’ to foster the growth of the diamond industry in Surat and Gujarat. The new textile policy will be effective for 5 years and will contribute to the advancement and growth of the textile sector. The new textile policy is set to enhance the textile industry in the state, generating new employment opportunities both directly and indirectly within this sector. New investments will also be directed towards the textile sector, enabling Gujarat to forge a new path of development. Recently, the diamond industry has encountered significant challenges due to the recession.

MLA Kumar Kanani stated that following the textile industry, the diamond industry ranks as the second most significant source of employment in Gujarat. At present, numerous units are set to shut down as a result of the significant recession. The rate of unemployment among diamond artisans has risen as a result. The diamond workers are presently facing significant challenges as a result of unemployment.

“As a result of their inability to cover their children’s school fees and support their families, the incidence of suicide cases is rising daily. “In order to revitalize the diamond industry, the Gujarat government has introduced a new policy aimed at the development of the diamond sector,” stated MLA Kanani.
