Surat : The four-day long Surat International Auto Expo 2024, organized by the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI), kicked off on a high note on March 15th. The much-anticipated event witnessed the India debut of three exciting new cars: the Volvo XC40 Recharge, the Hyundai Creta N Line, and the BYD Seal.

Ramesh Vaghasia, President of SGCCI, highlighted the need for a stronger domestic automobile industry. He pointed out that while 70% of passenger cars in India belong to foreign companies, the country boasts a significantly lower car ownership rate compared to developed nations. Vaghasia emphasized the potential for growth, particularly in the electric vehicle (EV) segment, where a large portion of components are currently imported.

E Rajiv, Executive Director of the International Automobile Center of Excellence (iACE), echoed Vaghasia’s sentiments, underlining the vast opportunities in EVs. He explained that an EV requires around 4,000 components, presenting a chance to establish a robust domestic manufacturing ecosystem and create significant employment opportunities. Additionally, Rajiv pointed towards the potential in the vehicle scrapping business, considering the average lifespan of vehicles in India is only 15 years.

Girish Karkera, Editor of Car & Bike India, weighed in on the evolving landscape of the automobile sector. He stressed that the future goes beyond just speed and comfort, placing increasing importance on sustainability and safety features. Hydrogen engines and autonomous technologies are rapidly gaining traction, shaping the direction of the industry. Notably, Surat, known for its innovative spirit and entrepreneurial drive, has made significant contributions through manufacturing and dealerships.

Auto Expo Chairman Mehul Desai highlighted the event’s significance. He declared it the largest composite auto exhibition in Western India, showcasing a wide range of vehicles across various categories. From electric and hybrid cars to passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, commercial vehicles, and auto components, the expo boasts offerings for every budget. Visitors can expect to see cars priced from Rs 4.5 lakh to a staggering Rs 4.5 crore, alongside motorcycles ranging from Rs 40,000 to Rs 40 lakh. With leading brands showcasing their latest innovations, the Surat Auto Expo 2024 promises to be a thrilling experience for auto enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.
