Surat : During a period when the Meteorological Department had forecasted a scorching heatwave with temperatures soaring up to 42 degrees Celsius, a pleasant surprise came in the form of light rain showers across a majority of South Gujarat on Friday morning.

Residents in Surat, Valsad, Navsari, and Bharuch districts can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the oppressive heat subsides. However, the unexpected downpour has brought concern to mango farmers who now face potential losses to their standing crops.

“The change in the atmosphere was rather abrupt,” remarked a resident of Surat’s Vesu area. The morning started with overcast skies and scattered rains in various parts of the city, such as Bhatar, Pal, Jahangirpura, and Adajan. It provided a welcome respite from the scorching temperatures we’ve been enduring.

Similar sentiments were expressed in Vyara and Dahod, where the light rains brought relief from the intense heat. Unfortunately, the unexpected rainfall has had a negative impact on the region’s mango crop, which is a significant source of income for numerous farmers.

“The unexpected shift in weather has the farmer from Valsad concerned about the potential harm it could inflict on their mango crop,” the farmer expressed. “The mangoes are not yet ripe, and unexpected rainfall can have a significant impact on their quality and market value.”

The concerns are especially pronounced in Navsari, as the mango harvest season is quickly approaching. “The first batch of mangoes had just arrived in the market,” another farmer explained. ”

However, due to the recent heavy rainfall, traders have become hesitant to make purchases, concerned about potential damage to the fruit.” The unexpected rains provided some relief from the heatwave for residents, but for us farmers, it could mean double trouble.

The situation serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of agriculture, where weather fluctuations can greatly affect our livelihoods. The upcoming days will play a vital role in assessing the impact on the mango crop and the potential losses that farmers in South Gujarat may face.
