Surat :  Excitement and anticipation fill the air at Surat Airport as the finishing touches are put in place for the inauguration of its new terminal building. Scheduled for unveiling by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this state-of-the-art structure stands as a testament to the city’s ambition for modernization and enhanced travel facilities.

Constructed at a cost of Rs 138.48 crore, the expansive terminal building is an impressive addition to the existing airport infrastructure. The upcoming inauguration, scheduled alongside the unveiling of the world’s largest office building, Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB), is expected to mark a significant milestone for Surat on December 17.

The journey towards this milestone began in January 2019 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated a comprehensive Rs 353 crore redevelopment project for Surat Airport. Among the key components of this initiative was the expansion of the terminal building, parallel taxi track ways, and aircraft parking. The culmination of this effort is the completion of the new terminal building, which is poised to redefine the travel experience for passengers.

The expanded terminal building has seen a remarkable increase in its capacity, growing from 8,474 square meters to an impressive 25,520 square meters. This upgrade includes a range of modern facilities such as a reserve lounge, bank ATMs, central display screens, a spacious waiting area, 20 check-in counters, 13 immigration counters, and 5 baggage carousels.

A significant highlight of the terminal building’s upgrade is its compliance with Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) standards, earning a commendable 4-star rating. This eco-friendly approach aligns with Surat’s commitment to sustainable development and responsible infrastructure.

Moreover, the enhanced terminal is poised to accommodate up to 1800 passengers during peak hours, ensuring a seamless and comfortable travel experience. The expansion of the terminal is projected to elevate Surat Airport’s passenger capacity from 17.5 lakh to 26 lakh per annum, catering to the growing demand for air travel in the region.

Notably, the airport authorities have not just focused on the terminal expansion but also on augmenting other crucial facilities. The ongoing apron work, with an expenditure of Rs 72 crore, aims to further enhance the airport’s operational efficiency. Additionally, the installation of new aerobridges and the development of extensive vehicle parking facilities are set to elevate the airport to international standards.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has orchestrated the creation of a spacious parking area at Surat’s Customs Notified Airport, catering to various vehicles including four-wheelers, taxis, buses, two-wheelers, and dedicated parking for staff and VIPs. Rickshaws have also been given a designated space in the new parking lot, enhancing accessibility and convenience for commuters.

Looking ahead, plans for the airport entail the removal of walls flanking the terminal building, eventually transforming it into a massive terminal. The recent commissioning of a new aerobridge and the readiness of one side of the parallel taxiway demonstrate the airport’s preparedness for future expansions and advancements.

With separate departure and arrival facilities for international passengers, positioned on the first floor of the terminal building, Surat Airport is poised to offer a world-class travel experience. The meticulously planned infrastructure promises a distinct entry and exit experience for both domestic and international passengers.
