Surat, Gujarat – The skies over Surat turned from a much-anticipated monsoon blessing into a travel nightmare this Monday, as torrential rains brought the city’s airport to a grinding halt. Passengers faced widespread chaos and frustration with ten flights, both arriving and departing, delayed by durations ranging from a frustrating 30 minutes to a grueling two hours. The sudden and severe weather conditions exposed the vulnerability of air operations to the unpredictable whims of the monsoon.
“This is ridiculous! We were looking forward to a quick trip, and now we’ve been stuck here for nearly two hours with no clear update,” exclaimed an exasperated Meera Sharma, a passenger awaiting her IndiGo flight to Delhi. “They talk about modernization, but a little rain and everything goes haywire. What about passenger comfort during these prolonged waits?”
The primary culprits behind the extensive delays were identified as heavy rainfall, significantly reduced visibility, and exceptionally strong winds. These conditions collectively rendered takeoff and landing hazardous, forcing airlines to hold flights.
Among the worst affected were IndiGo services. The Surat-Diu flight experienced the longest delay, stretching to 1 hour and 56 minutes, while its return leg, Diu-Surat, was behind by 1 hour and 11 minutes. Flights connecting Surat to the national capital also saw substantial hold-ups: Surat-Delhi was delayed by 1 hour and 18 minutes, and Delhi-Surat by 59 minutes.
Adding to the passenger woes, six flights operated by Air India Express also faced significant disruptions, with delays ranging from 30 to 57 minutes. Even international connections were not spared, as the Surat-Bangkok and Bangkok-Surat flights were pushed back by half an hour each.
“I had an important meeting scheduled in Delhi this afternoon,” sighed Rohit Patel, a business traveler whose Air India Express flight was delayed by 57 minutes. “Now, that’s completely out of the window. This isn’t just an inconvenience; it has real financial implications for many of us.” Another passenger, a young student named Ayesha Khan, expressed her disappointment, “I was supposed to meet my family for a special occasion. Now, I’m just hoping I get there before it’s too late. The communication from the airline could be better; we’re just left waiting and guessing.”
The extensive list of delayed flights paints a clear picture of the widespread impact:
IndiGo: Diu – Surat (1 hr 56 mins), Surat – Delhi (1 hr 18 mins), Surat – Diu (1 hr 11 mins), Delhi – Surat (59 mins)
Air India Express: Surat Delhi (57 mins), Delhi Surat (38 mins), Chennai Surat (35 mins), Surat Chennai (35 mins), Surat Bangkok (31 mins), Bangkok Surat (30 mins).
