Surat, Gujarat — A sudden grass fire broke out in the operational area of Surat International Airport on Thursday afternoon, triggering a swift emergency response and affecting flight operations.

Thick smoke from the blaze posed visibility concerns for pilots, prompting air traffic control to divert a few incoming flights, including the Hyderabad to Surat flight, to Ahmedabad. No casualties were reported.

Firefighters from the Airport Authority and Surat Municipal Fire & Emergency Services rushed to the site and were making all efforts to douse the flames and contain the fire from spreading further into sensitive operational zones.

“Firefighting teams are working on a war footing to bring the situation under control,” said an airport official, adding that passenger safety remains the top priority.

Sources said that the Dubai to Surat flight in the after is likely to be delayed due to the ongoing firefighting operation at the airport.

Airport operations were partially suspended, with resumption expected once the fire is completely extinguished and safety checks are complete.
