Snake on Runway: New Wildlife Challenge for Surat Airport

SURAT :  A new safety concern has emerged at Surat International Airport after a three-foot-long snake was spotted on the runway while an aircraft was preparing for take-off. The incident comes months after jackals were reportedly seen near the airport premises, raising questions over wildlife intrusion management at one of Gujarat’s busiest airports.

The snake was noticed by a passenger sitting inside a private aircraft moments before departure. The passenger immediately alerted the pilot, who informed the airport control room and authorities. Quick action by the airport team ensured that the situation was brought under control and flight operations continued without any major disruption.

A video recorded by the passenger from the aircraft window has gone viral on social media. In the video, the passenger can be heard saying in Gujarati that a large snake was moving on the Surat airport runway.

According to officials, the snake appeared frightened by the sound and movement of the aircraft and remained on the runway for some time with its hood raised. The pilot stopped the aircraft temporarily, allowing airport ground staff and security personnel to respond.

“The passenger’s alertness helped the airport team take immediate action. Safety of passengers and aircraft movement remains the top priority,” an airport official said.

The incident is believed to be linked to the monsoon season, when reptiles and other creatures often move out of their natural habitats due to increased moisture and water accumulation.

Surat airport has a large open area with greenery and bushes around its operational zone. Wildlife experts believe the snake may have entered the runway area from nearby vegetation.

“During monsoon, snakes and other reptiles often come out in search of dry places or food. Regular monitoring of such areas is important around sensitive locations like airports,” a wildlife expert said.

Airport security personnel and ground staff immediately monitored the movement of the snake to prevent it from coming under aircraft wheels or creating any emergency situation.
