The Senegal national football team kept its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign alive with a commanding 5-0 victory over Iraq in their final Group I fixture on Friday, significantly improving the Senegal national football team vs Iraq national football team standings.

The emphatic win moved Senegal into third place in Group I World Cup 2026, giving the African side hope of qualifying for the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams.

Senegal vs Iraq: Early breakthrough and Iraq reduced to 10 men

Senegal made the perfect start, taking the lead just four minutes into the match.

Following a dangerous corner from Lamine Camara, the ball deflected off Habib Diarra before finding the back of the net, giving the Lions of Teranga an early advantage.

Iraq’s challenge became much tougher moments later when defender Rebin Sulaka was shown a straight red card after bringing down Sadio Mané, who was through on goal. After a VAR review, referee Anthony Taylor confirmed the dismissal, leaving Iraq to play with ten men for most of the match.

Although Iraq defended resiliently during the remainder of the first half, Senegal dominated possession and continued to create chances.

Second-half masterclass from Senegal

Senegal completely took control after the break.

Ismaila Sarr doubled the lead in the 56th minute with a close-range finish, becoming Senegal’s all-time leading World Cup scorer while also recording his fourth goal in the tournament.

Substitute Pape Gueye then produced two spectacular long-range goals to extend Senegal’s advantage, becoming the first Senegal player to score twice as a substitute in a FIFA World Cup match.

Iliman Ndiaye completed the scoring late in the game with another brilliant strike from outside the penalty area as Senegal secured a memorable 5-0 victory.

Sarr, Gueye and Ndiaye each finished the match with both a goal and an assist — the first time three players from the same team have achieved that feat in a World Cup match since Germany’s famous 7-1 win over Brazil in 2014.

Senegal national football team makes World Cup history

The victory saw the Senegal national football team become the first African nation to score five goals in a men’s FIFA World Cup match.

The result also provided a significant boost to Senegal’s goal difference, an important factor as they await results from the remaining groups to determine whether they qualify among the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Senegal national football team vs Iraq national football team standings

Following the result:

  • France remain top of Group I.
  • Norway finish second.
  • Senegal move into third place with improved goal difference.
  • Iraq finish at the bottom of the Group I World Cup 2026 standings.

While Senegal’s qualification is not yet guaranteed, the dominant win has dramatically improved their chances of reaching the knockout stage.

For Sadio Mané and his teammates, the record-breaking victory keeps their FIFA World Cup 2026 dream alive as they wait for the final standings across all groups to be confirmed.
