Senegal vs Iraq: Early breakthrough and Iraq reduced to 10 men
Senegal made the perfect start, taking the lead just four minutes into the match.
Following a dangerous corner from Lamine Camara, the ball deflected off Habib Diarra before finding the back of the net, giving the Lions of Teranga an early advantage.
Iraq’s challenge became much tougher moments later when defender Rebin Sulaka was shown a straight red card after bringing down Sadio Mané, who was through on goal. After a VAR review, referee Anthony Taylor confirmed the dismissal, leaving Iraq to play with ten men for most of the match.
Although Iraq defended resiliently during the remainder of the first half, Senegal dominated possession and continued to create chances.
Second-half masterclass from Senegal
Senegal completely took control after the break.
Ismaila Sarr doubled the lead in the 56th minute with a close-range finish, becoming Senegal’s all-time leading World Cup scorer while also recording his fourth goal in the tournament.
Substitute Pape Gueye then produced two spectacular long-range goals to extend Senegal’s advantage, becoming the first Senegal player to score twice as a substitute in a FIFA World Cup match.
Iliman Ndiaye completed the scoring late in the game with another brilliant strike from outside the penalty area as Senegal secured a memorable 5-0 victory.
Sarr, Gueye and Ndiaye each finished the match with both a goal and an assist — the first time three players from the same team have achieved that feat in a World Cup match since Germany’s famous 7-1 win over Brazil in 2014.
