New Delhi : At PLASTINDIA 2023, held from February 1-5, LANXESS Performance Materials—a leading global joint venture established by LANXESS and Advent International for high-performance engineering polymers—displayed a variety of innovative and lightweight solutions using high-performance plastics for the automotive, two-wheeler, and e-mobility industries. Moreover, the company showcased a few of the ways in which high-performance plastics are used in the electronics and electrical sectors.

Strong and rigid polyamides and polybutylene terephthalates reinforced with up to 60% glass fibre are appropriate for use in lightweight construction. They are a more lightweight and cost-effective option than metals like steel, aluminium, and die-cast zinc, as well as sheet moulding compounds (SMC) and other reinforced thermosets. Thus, LANXESS Performance Materials has been continuously expanding its extensive selection of injection moulding materials in this market by introducing new variants.

Lightweight and environmentally friendly solutions for automobiles were on display at LANXESS’s booth at PLASTINDIA 2023. These solutions included front-end module structures, air intake hoses, engine covers, brake pedals, spare wheel recesses, oil modules, and more. The company is a major provider of engineering plastics (Durethan®, Pocan®) in both India and around the world. Single-layer polyamide fuel tanks, for instance, are an example of a breakthrough this year in the use of these materials in both injection-molded and blow-molded designs for various components of two-wheelers. In a first-of-its-kind application, Durethan® BC550Z is being utilised to make the fuel tank of two-wheelers that abide by the strict standards set out by the Environmental Protection Agency of the United States.

“India is quickly becoming the world’s second largest two-wheeler market and one of the fastest-growing markets for passenger cars. We are hopeful for the future of our high-performance plastics in India, and we believe that a major platform such as PLASTINDIA will help to prove this. Every major automaker is constantly experimenting with new applications, and the two-wheeler industry is poised for growth this year as well. According to Milan Vignjevic, Director – Sales and Marketing, LANXESS Performance Materials – APAC region, “the compounding facility for Durethan® and Pocan® in Jhagadia, Gujarat is equipped to fulfil the needs of not just the Indian market but also consumers internationally.”

Pankaj Khare, Business Head – of LANXESS Performance Materials India Private Limited, made the following observation on the Indian market: “With the backing of the government, electric vehicles have started penetrating in the Indian market.” With its extensive selection of PA6, PA66, and PBT e-mobility application solutions, LANXESS Performance Materials is well-positioned to meet the needs of this expanding market. High-performance plastics (including FR compounds) are needed for new battery systems and electric power train developments, so please get in touch with us if this is the case.
