Surat : A man hailing from Kerala, who had come to Surat along with his wife to purchase textile goods at Ring Road, died in mysterious circumstances after falling into the lift pit from the 7th floor of a hotel located on Ring Road on Thursday evening. The hotel management stated that the deceased was warned by the housekeeping staff to wait for the elevator to approach the floor, but he opened the door and fell into the pit.

The incident occurred at about 5:15 pm at Tex Palazzo hotel located adjacent to the Surat Textile Market (STM) on Ring road, Surat. The deceased, identified as Ranjit Babu, was staying at the hotel with his wife. The deceased, a resident of Kottayam district in Kerala, had arrived in Surat for the purchase of textile goods along with his wife.

According to the hotel sources, Ranjit Babu wanted to travel to the ground floor, but the housekeeping staff warned him that the elevator is  yet to approach the floor. Despite the warning, the deceased opened the door and fell into the lift pit. The hotel staff immediately rushed to his rescue. While the victim was being shifted to the hospital, he succumbed to serious injuries on the way.

Bicaji Davierwala, owner of Tex Palazzo hotel said, “The deceased was staying at our hotel along with his wife. The hotel lift is manually operated by the liftman. The deceased was warned by our housekeeping staff to not open the lift door. The man fell from the gap into the lift pit and sustained serious injuries”

Davierwala added, “Had the lift crashed and collapsed, our liftman would have died along with the deceased. We still do not understand why the man opened the lift door when he was warned by the housekeeping staff”

Sources said that the wife of the Kerala man was inquiring with the hotel staff regarding the bag containing cash that was with her husband.

However, the Kerala samajam has claimed that the incident occurred due to the negligence of the hotel. The police have registered a case and investigations are on.
