Jeet, Shiney to represent India at World Deaf Table Tennis Championships

The 15-year-old Jeet, class 7 student of Umang Badhir Sikshan Sankul, Ahmedabad, is the reigning national champion in youth boys’ category and will come out for India in the same event at Worlds.

Gandhidham: Two Gujarat paddlers-Jeet Pandya and Shiney Gomes-will don India tee as they are named in the Indian contingent which will take part in the 1st World Deaf Youth Table Tennis Championships and 4th World Deaf Table Tennis Championships to be held in Taipei, Chinese Taipei from July 8 to 20.

The 15-year-old Jeet, class 7 student of Umang Badhir Sikshan Sankul, Ahmedabad, is the reigning national champion in youth boys’ category and will come out for India in the same event at Worlds.

Shiney, who trains at St Xavier’s, Loyola TT academy in Ahmedabad under the watchful eyes of her father Anthony Gomes, will play in the women’s category. The 25-year-old Gomes has already taken part in previous three editions of the World Deaf TT meet and was also part of the Indian table tennis team in the 23rd Summer Deaflympics held in Turkey in 2017.

Both Jeet and Gomes are currently undergoing training in the camp held from July 1 to 7 at the Jawahar Lal Nehru stadium in Delhi.

Apart from two paddlers, two Gujarat coaches-Nirja Trivedi and Sahibjot Singh, are named coaches with the Indian contingent of eight players.

Men’s: Srijith Majumdar, Priom Chakraborty.

Women’s Suravi Ghosh, Shiney Gomes.

Youth Boys: Jeet Pandya, Prayas Saha.

Youth Girls: Cindrella Mullick, Aishwin Kaur.

Coaches: Nirja Trivedi, Sahibjot Singh. Assistant coach: HS Moorthy.
